US Orléans Loiret Football Crest History
The original crest of US Orléans-Arago, introduced in 1976 following the club's formation, featured a traditional shield divided into red and yellow, the historic colours of Orléans. At its centre was a football, surrounded by the words "Orléans USO-Arago Football." The coat of arms of Orléans appeared at the bottom of the shield, emphasising the club's connection to the city.
In 1978, the club adopted a bold, graphic identity consisting of horizontal red and yellow stripes. A football dominated the centre, while a wasp hovered above it, introducing the insect that would later become the club's defining symbol and inspire the nickname Les Guêpes (The Wasps). The words "USO Arago Orléans" appeared beneath the football.
A slight redesign followed in 1979, keeping the striped background, football, and wasp but simplifying the typography. The club name became "U.S.O. Orléans," reflecting the growing prominence of the USO identity while maintaining the same overall visual style.
In 1983, the badge evolved into a more rounded design. A golden football became the main feature, with the wasp positioned above it and a curved red banner displaying "US Orléans Football." This version simplified the previous striped layout while retaining the club's most recognisable symbols.
Between 1992 and 2000, the football section of the Club Omnisports USO adopted a simple banner-style logo. The design incorporated a football, the coat of arms of Orléans, and the wording "Club Omnisports USO – Section Football." It reflected the club's position within the wider multi-sport organisation rather than as an independent football identity.
In 2000, a new shield-shaped crest appeared. The badge featured the words "Football U.S.O. Orléans" above a stylised football, using the club's traditional yellow, red, and black colours. The design represented a return to a more conventional football crest.
A temporary modern wordmark was introduced in 2002, displaying "USO 45 Foot" in minimalist typography. The number 45 referred to the Loiret department, while the clean design reflected the club's restructuring and new visual direction.
From 2004, the club returned to a shield, now branded USO 45 Foot. The crest incorporated the coat of arms of Orléans, a diagonal graphic element, and the club's traditional red-and-yellow colours. This badge remained in use during the club's climb back through the French football pyramid.
In 2009, following the club's rebranding as US Orléans Loiret Football, a circular badge was introduced. The crest prominently featured a large wasp carrying a football, symbolising the club's nickname, Les Guêpes. The outer ring displayed "Orléans Loiret Football", reinforcing the club's representation of the entire Loiret department.
Since 2011, US Orléans has used a modern shield-shaped crest. The badge combines red and yellow, the city's traditional colours, with the words "Orléans Loiret Football" at the top. A stylised black wasp dribbling a football appears at the bottom, becoming the dominant symbol of the club's identity. The streamlined design reflects both the club's modern ambitions and its long-standing nickname, while maintaining a strong connection to the city and the Loiret region.

US Orléans Loiret Football Club History
Founded in 1976, US Orléans Loiret Football was created through the merger of the football sections of Union Sportive Orléanaise and Arago Sport Orléanais, forming US Orléans-Arago. The merger aimed to establish a stronger football club capable of representing the city of Orléans at the national level. The club adopted the traditional red and yellow colours of the city and soon became known by the nickname Les Guêpes (The Wasps).
During its early years, US Orléans progressed steadily through the French football pyramid, reaching the professional divisions in the late 1970s. The club spent several seasons in Division 2, establishing itself as a competitive side despite limited financial resources. Although promotion to the top flight proved elusive, Orléans earned a reputation as a difficult team to face at the Stade de la Source.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the club alternated between the second and third tiers of French football. Financial difficulties eventually forced a period of decline, and by the early 2000s, US Orléans had fallen into the amateur divisions. During this time, the club reorganised under the name USO 45, focusing on rebuilding through youth development and local talent.
The revival began in the late 2000s. Renamed US Orléans Loiret Football in 2009, the club quickly climbed the leagues, winning promotion to the Championnat National and then to Ligue 2 in 2014. The promotion marked the club's return to professional football after more than two decades and represented one of the greatest achievements in its history.
US Orléans remained in Ligue 2 for six consecutive seasons between 2014 and 2020. During this period, the club established itself as a competitive second-division side, earning respect for its organised football and prudent management despite operating with a relatively modest budget.
One of the club's most memorable moments came in the 2016–17 Coupe de France, when Orléans reached the Round of 16, continuing a tradition of strong performances in domestic cup competitions. Earlier, in 1989, the club had famously reached the Coupe de France semi-finals, defeating several higher-division opponents before eventually being eliminated by Olympique de Marseille.
Following relegation from Ligue 2 in 2020, US Orléans returned to the Championnat National, where it has continued to compete for promotion back to professional football. The club remains committed to developing young players from the Loiret region while maintaining its ambition of returning to Ligue 2.
US Orléans' principal rivals are LB Châteauroux in the Centre-Val de Loire Derby, reflecting the rivalry between the region's two largest historic clubs. Matches against Tours FC and Le Mans FC have also developed into important regional contests, while encounters with Bourges FC and FC Rouen have become competitive fixtures through frequent meetings in the Championnat National.
