USL Dunkerque Crest History
The first widely recognised crest of Union Sportive de Dunkerque (USD), used from 1909 to 1980, was a blue-and-white shield featuring a bold white cross on a blue background. The initials "U.S.D." appeared prominently across the centre. The simple design reflected the club's traditional colours and remained in use for over seventy years, becoming closely associated with Dunkirk football.
In 1980, following the club's merger and reorganisation as Union Sportive du Littoral de Dunkerque (USLD), a completely new identity was introduced. The new circular blue badge featured a white dolphin leaping above the stylised lowercase letters "ud." The dolphin symbolised Dunkirk's close relationship with the sea and the English Channel, while the modern logo reflected the club's fresh start.
A major redesign arrived in 1987 with the introduction of a tall shield-shaped crest. The badge displayed the initials USLD vertically in white against a blue background. At the bottom sat a football, accompanied by a blue dolphin, while the club's motto, "Contre Vents et Marées" ("Against Winds and Tides"), curved around the lower edge. This crest firmly established the dolphin as the club's principal symbol and remained in use for over two decades.
To celebrate the club's centenary in 2009, a special commemorative crest was introduced for one season. It retained the familiar shield shape but added a gold banner reading "1909–2009" above the dolphin and football, along with the inscription "Cent Ans de Foot" ("One Hundred Years of Football") at the bottom. The badge celebrated a century of football in Dunkirk while preserving the club's traditional identity.
In 2010, the centenary elements were removed, returning to a cleaner version of the previous shield. The crest continued to feature the vertical USLD lettering, the blue dolphin, a football, and the motto "Contre Vents et Marées", with "Depuis 1909" ("Since 1909") added beneath the badge. This version accompanied the club through its return to professional football and remained in use until 2025.
In 2025, USL Dunkerque unveiled a completely modernised crest. The new badge adopted a dark navy and gold shield, inspired by the city's maritime heritage. At its centre is a large gold dolphin encircling the intertwined USLD monogram, with "Dunkerque" displayed prominently across the top and "1909" at the bottom. Decorative wave patterns fill the lower part of the crest, reinforcing the club's identity as a port-city team.

USL Dunkerque Club History
Founded in 1909 as Union Sportive de Dunkerque (USD), Union Sportive du Littoral de Dunkerque (USL Dunkerque) is one of the oldest football clubs in northern France. Based in the historic port city of Dunkirk (Dunkerque) on the North Sea coast, the club has always maintained a strong maritime identity. Its nickname, Les Maritimes (The Mariners), reflects the city's long-standing relationship with shipping, fishing, and the sea.
For much of the first half of the 20th century, Dunkerque competed in regional and amateur competitions before gradually establishing itself in the national divisions. The club became one of the leading teams in the Nord region, developing a loyal fanbase at the Stade Marcel-Tribut.
A major turning point came in 1980, when Union Sportive de Dunkerque merged with Stade Olympique Maritime Dunkerquois (SOMD) to form Union Sportive du Littoral de Dunkerque (USLD). The merger united the city's footballing resources and created a stronger club capable of competing at a higher national level.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, USL Dunkerque became a regular competitor in Division 2, spending several seasons in France's second tier. Although promotion to the top flight remained out of reach, the club established itself as one of the strongest teams in northern France outside Ligue 1.
The following decades brought financial challenges and periods in the lower divisions. Despite relegations to the Championnat National and Championnat National 2, Dunkerque remained resilient, rebuilding through sensible management and local player development.
The club returned to professional football in 2020 after winning promotion to Ligue 2, ending a 24-year absence from the professional divisions. The achievement marked one of the greatest moments in the club's modern history and highlighted the successful rebuilding project led by the club's management.
After suffering relegation in 2022, Dunkerque responded immediately by finishing runners-up in the Championnat National during the 2022–23 season, securing an instant return to Ligue 2. Under head coach Luís Castro, the club became known for its attractive, possession-based football and emerged as one of the most progressive teams in the division.
During the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons, USL Dunkerque established itself as a competitive Ligue 2 side, challenging for promotion and gaining recognition for its modern playing style. Backed by new ownership and an ambitious sporting project, the club has continued to strengthen its position while remaining proud of its community roots and maritime identity.
USL Dunkerque's principal rival is US Boulogne Côte d'Opale in the Côte d'Opale Derby, the traditional rivalry between the two major coastal clubs of northern France. Matches against Valenciennes FC, RC Lens, and Lille OSC also carry regional significance.
