PEC Zwolle Crest History

In 1971 the club adopted the name PEC Zwolle. New crest designs incorporated the club's blue-and-white colours and established a stronger visual connection with the city. These badges marked the beginning of the club's modern identity and accompanied PEC during its growth in professional football.

Following financial difficulties and bankruptcy in 1990, the club was re-established as FC Zwolle. A new crest was introduced, although the overall design remained largely similar to its predecessor. The principal change was the replacement of the name "PEC Zwolle" with "FC Zwolle," ensuring continuity despite the organisational reset.

One of the most distinctive elements of the modern crest is the incorporation of four city shields of Zwolle, arranged in a clover-like formation. These shields are derived from the city's heraldic symbols and create a unique visual identity unlike any other club in Dutch football. The blue-and-white colour palette further reinforces the connection between club and city.

In 2012, after securing promotion back to the Eredivisie, the club officially restored the historic name PEC Zwolle. The crest was updated accordingly, replacing "FC Zwolle" with "PEC Zwolle" while retaining the familiar design featuring the four Zwolle shields.

PEC Zwolle Club History

Founded on 12 June 1910, PEC Zwolle traces its origins to a merger between two clubs from Zwolle: Prins Hendrik and Ende Desespereert Nimmer ("And Despair Never"). The merged club adopted the name PEC, an acronym derived from the names of its predecessor clubs, laying the foundations for more than a century of football history in the city of Zwolle.

The club entered professional football in the 1950s following the introduction of professionalism in the Netherlands. 

A significant milestone arrived in 1971, when the club adopted the name PEC Zwolle. The change strengthened the connection between the football club and the city it represented, helping to create a stronger regional identity.

In 1982, the club was reorganised and renamed PEC Zwolle '82. Despite financial and sporting challenges, the team continued to compete in Dutch professional football and maintained its importance within the city.

A major setback occurred in 1990, when financial difficulties led to bankruptcy. The club was forced to restart under the name FC Zwolle, beginning a new chapter while preserving the football traditions of Zwolle.

Success arrived in 2002, when FC Zwolle secured promotion to the Eredivisie. Although the stay in the top flight was relatively brief, it demonstrated the club's growing strength and ambition.

Another important breakthrough came in 2012, when the club won the Eerste Divisie title and secured promotion to the Eredivisie. At the same time, the historic name PEC Zwolle was officially restored, reconnecting the club with its roots and heritage.

The most successful period in club history followed shortly afterwards. In 2014, PEC Zwolle achieved the greatest accomplishment in its existence by winning the KNVB Cup for the first time. In a memorable final, Zwolle defeated Ajax 5–1, securing the first major trophy in club history and one of the most famous cup final victories ever seen in Dutch football.

Only a few months later, PEC added another honour by winning the Johan Cruyff Shield, defeating Ajax once again. These successes marked the golden era of the club and established Zwolle among the most respected teams in Dutch football.

PEC Zwolle plays its home matches at the MAC³PARK Stadion (formerly IJsseldelta Stadion), which opened in 2009. The modern venue replaced the club's historic Oosterenkstadion and provided a platform for the club's growth during its most successful years.

The club's fiercest rivalry is with Go Ahead Eagles in the IJssel Derby, one of the oldest and most passionate rivalries in Dutch football. The rivalry reflects the historic competition between the nearby cities of Zwolle and Deventer.
