Cuiabá EC Crest History
The crest history of Cuiabá Esporte Clube is relatively short compared with Brazil's century-old clubs, reflecting the club's foundation in 2001 and its rapid development from a regional team into a nationally recognised side. Throughout its history, green and yellow have dominated the identity, connecting the club both with Mato Grosso and the colours traditionally associated with Brazil.
The original 2001–2009 crest was considerably more detailed than the designs that followed. It used an irregular shield divided into yellow, white and green sections, with “CUIABÁ” written prominently in red across the top. The centre contained a green silhouette representing the state of Mato Grosso, together with a tall white-and-yellow geometric element. The club name appeared around the lower part of the shield, accompanied by its foundation date. Although visually complex, the badge clearly established green and yellow as Cuiabá's principal colours.
After a period in which the club temporarily suspended its professional football activities, Cuiabá returned with a substantially modernised visual identity. The 2011–2012 crest introduced the basic shield that would define virtually every subsequent version. The badge was divided horizontally between a bright yellow upper section and dark green lower section, while a pointed green geometric form rose through the yellow area. “CUIABÁ ESPORTE CLUBE” appeared across the centre, with 2001 placed near the bottom. Three gold stars were positioned above the shield.
For 2013–2015, the overall structure remained almost unchanged, but the stars were altered. Four green stars appeared around the top of the shield, while the typography and proportions were refined. The simplified design was becoming firmly established as the club's recognisable identity.
The 2016 version introduced another change to the honours displayed above the badge. A gold central star was surrounded by several smaller green stars, creating a more elaborate arrangement. The underlying shield itself remained consistent, demonstrating that Cuiabá had already settled on its core visual identity.
Between 2017 and 2019, the stars were dramatically simplified to a single large green star above the shield. The yellow upper field, green lower section, central pointed element and white Cuiabá lettering remained essentially unchanged.
In 2020, the crest again received only a minor alteration. The single star was replaced by two green stars, positioned symmetrically above the shield. Otherwise, the design continued the modern visual language established following the club's return to professional football.
Cuiabá EC Club History
Cuiabá Esporte Clube was founded on 12 December 2001 in Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso. The club was created by former Brazilian international Gaúcho (Luís Carlos Tóffoli) and, despite being considerably younger than most of Brazil's traditional professional clubs, developed rapidly into the leading football force of its state.
Success came almost immediately. Cuiabá won its first Campeonato Mato-Grossense in 2003, only two years after its foundation, and successfully defended the title in 2004. These early championships established the club as a serious competitor in Mato Grosso and provided the foundation for ambitions beyond state football.
Despite this promising beginning, Cuiabá encountered financial and organisational difficulties. After the 2006 season, the club temporarily withdrew from professional competition. Its absence lasted several years before a restructuring allowed Cuiabá to return to professional football in 2009.
The revival transformed the club's fortunes. Cuiabá gradually became the dominant force in the Campeonato Mato-Grossense, collecting numerous state championships during the 2010s and 2020s. More importantly, the club began climbing through Brazil's national league system.
Cuiabá gained national attention by winning the Copa Verde in 2015, defeating Remo in the final. The regional competition, contested primarily by clubs from Brazil's North and Centre-West regions, gave the Dourado one of its first significant trophies outside Mato Grosso. Cuiabá won the competition again in 2019, confirming its growing regional importance.
The club's progress through the national divisions was particularly impressive. After establishing itself in Série C, Cuiabá earned promotion to Série B in 2018. Rather than simply consolidating at the second level, the club continued to develop and achieved a historic promotion to Série A in 2020, less than two decades after its foundation.
Cuiabá made its Série A debut in 2021, becoming the first club from Mato Grosso to compete in the modern era of Brazil's top division. The promotion represented a major milestone not only for the club but for football throughout the state, bringing regular matches against Brazil's largest and most historic teams to Cuiabá.
Cuiabá developed important rivalries with established local clubs such as Mixto and Luverdense. The rivalry with Mixto is particularly significant because it contrasts one of the state's oldest traditional clubs with the much younger Cuiabá, whose rapid rise altered the balance of football in the region.
