Club History: Airdrieonians Football Club, commonly known as Airdrie, has a storied past rooted in Scottish football. Originally founded in 1878, the club was re-established in 2002 as Airdrie United following the liquidation of the original Airdrieonians. In 2013, with approval from the Scottish Football Association, the club reclaimed its historic name, reinforcing its deep connection to the community and its footballing heritage. Nicknamed “The Diamonds”, Airdrieonians are instantly recognizable by their iconic white shirt with a red diamond—a design that has symbolized the club for generations.
Crest: As crest Airdrie United introduced a blue double-headed eagle on a white shield, inspired by the town’s coat of arms. With the return to the Airdrieonians name in 2013, the club restored its classic crest, featuring a cockerel atop a shield with two lions passant and the club’s initials, a design worn from 1974 to 2002 (except in the 2000–01 season). In 2015 Following guidance from the Lord Lyon King of Arms, the club modified its crest to comply with heraldic rules. The shield was removed, and a chevron (representing the Airdrie Diamond) was introduced, maintaining the club’s legacy while modernizing its identity.
