The Ground
Deepdale, the proud home of Preston North End, stands as one of the most historic and iconic football stadiums in England. Located in Preston, Lancashire, it has been central to the identity of the Lilywhites since 1878, making it widely recognised as the world’s oldest continually used professional football ground. A ground steeped in tradition, it reflects both the heritage of a founding member of the Football League and the enduring pride of a town that has always stood behind its team.
With a current capacity of just over 23,000, Deepdale offers a classic matchday experience that blends history with modernisation. Its four stands are a tribute to both the past and present of the club: the Sir Tom Finney Stand, named after Preston’s most legendary player, provides the stadium’s focal point and honours one of football’s greatest icons. Opposite lies the Bill Shankly Kop, a reminder of the manager whose roots began at Preston before his legendary career with Liverpool. The Alan Kelly Town End pays tribute to another club hero, while the Invincibles Pavilion celebrates Preston’s unrivalled achievement of going unbeaten in the inaugural Football League season of 1888–89. Together, these stands create a setting that is both atmospheric and uniquely Prestonian.
Deepdale’s architecture tells the story of football’s growth itself. From its beginnings as a simple field with wooden terraces to extensive redevelopments in the 1990s and early 2000s, it has transformed into a modern all-seater stadium while retaining its identity as a historic football venue. Unlike many purpose-built arenas, Deepdale maintains an intimacy and connection to its heritage, making it a favourite for both home supporters and visiting fans.
