Between 1970 and 1980, Tromsø IL used a circular red badge surrounded by a gold laurel wreath, symbolising sporting achievement and victory. Across the centre ran a white diagonal sash bearing the red initials T.I.L. Tromsø Idrettslag (Tromsø IL) was founded on 15 September 1920 in Tromsø, Norway, becoming the leading football club of the Arctic region. Known affectionately as "Gutan" (The Boys), Tromsø IL has long been regarded as the northernmost top-flight football club in the world. The club adopted its traditional red and white colours and has become a symbol of football in Northern Norway.
For much of its early history, clubs from Northern Norway were excluded from competing for the Norwegian Cup and were not permitted to participate in the national league system. It was not until the 1960s and 1970s that northern clubs were fully integrated into Norwegian football. Tromsø quickly proved that teams from the far north could compete with the country's established clubs.
Tromsø earned promotion to the Norwegian First Division (now the Eliteserien) for the first time in 1985, marking the beginning of a remarkable period in the club's history.
