Mjøndalen IF Crest History
The earliest modern crest shown, used around 1970, featured a circular badge with a brown centre, reflecting Mjøndalen's famous playing colours. The stylised white initials MIF were arranged in a distinctive geometric monogram, while a white chain surrounded the outer edge of the badge. The chain symbolised the club's close connection to the local industrial and working-class community, particularly the paper mills and factories that shaped the history of Mjøndalen. This simple but distinctive emblem became strongly associated with the club during the latter half of the twentieth century.
Between 1970 and 1980, the crest briefly adopted a bright pink and white colour scheme while retaining the same circular layout, chain border, and MIF monogram. Although highly unusual in appearance, the design appears to have been used primarily in printed material and promotional graphics rather than as a permanent change to the club's traditional identity. The underlying symbolism and layout remained unchanged.
From 1980 to 1990, Mjøndalen returned to its traditional colours with a dark brown circular badge. The familiar chain border and MIF monogram were retained, while decorative radiating lines were added behind the initials to create greater depth and a more modern appearance. This version became closely associated with the club during its successful period in Norwegian football during the 1980s.
Between 1990 and 2007, the crest received only subtle refinements. The brown colour became lighter, the radiating background was softened, and the chain border was modernised while preserving the club's instantly recognisable identity. The geometric MIF monogram remained the central feature, continuing one of the longest-running visual identities in Norwegian football.
From 2007 to 2021, the badge was simplified once again. The radiating background disappeared, leaving a cleaner brown circular field surrounded by the traditional chain border. The white MIF monogram became more prominent, giving the crest a minimalist appearance while remaining faithful to the club's historic colours and industrial heritage.
Since 2021, Mjøndalen IF Fotball has used a refined version of its classic emblem. The brown-and-white colour palette returned together with a subtle radiating background, while the chain border and iconic MIF monogram remain unchanged. Rather than introducing a completely new identity, the redesign modernised the artwork and typography while preserving the symbols that have represented Mjøndalen for generations.

Mjøndalen IF Club History
Mjøndalen IF Fotball is the football section of Mjøndalen Idrettsforening, which was founded on 22 August 1910 in the industrial town of Mjøndalen, Buskerud, Norway. The club quickly became an important part of the local community, with its identity closely tied to the area's paper mills and factory workers. Its distinctive brown shirts, unique in Norwegian football, earned the club the nickname "Bruntrøyene" (The Brown Shirts).
The club enjoyed its first golden era during the 1930s, becoming one of Norway's strongest teams. Mjøndalen won the Norwegian First Division in 1933, 1934, and 1937, while also capturing the Norwegian Cup in 1933 and 1934. The team reached several other cup finals during the decade and established itself as one of the country's dominant clubs before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Following the war, Mjøndalen remained competitive but was unable to replicate the extraordinary success of the 1930s. The club alternated between the top and second tiers of Norwegian football, continuing to develop talented players while maintaining its reputation as one of Norway's traditional football clubs.
During the 1980s, Mjøndalen returned to the top flight and enjoyed another successful period. The club reached the Norwegian Cup Final in 1984, narrowly losing to Fredrikstad FK, and became known for its disciplined style of play and strong team spirit. Although major trophies proved elusive, Mjøndalen remained a respected competitor in Norwegian football.
After spending many years outside the top division, Mjøndalen experienced a remarkable revival under coach Vegard Hansen, who took charge in 2006. Hansen transformed the club over more than a decade, leading Mjøndalen from the Third Division to the Eliteserien. Promotion to Norway's top flight in 2014 was one of the greatest achievements in the club's modern history and highlighted the success of a long-term rebuilding project based on stability, hard work, and local identity.
Mjøndalen competed in the Eliteserien during 2015, before being relegated. The club responded by winning promotion once again in 2018, returning to the top division for the 2019 season. Mjøndalen remained in the Eliteserien until 2021, when relegation ended another memorable spell among Norway's elite clubs.
Mjøndalen's fiercest rivalry is with nearby Strømsgodset IF in the Buskerud Derby, one of Norway's oldest and most passionate local rivalries. Matches against Kongsvinger IL and Fredrikstad FK have also developed into important fixtures through frequent meetings in the Norwegian league system.
