The earliest widely recognised modern crest, used around 1970, featured a distinctive white triangular pennant with a blue "ZTE" monogram at its centre. The name Zalaegerszeg appeared across the top, while golden laurel branches flanked the central monogram, symbolising sporting success and achievement. The pennant shape reflected a popular style among Hungarian clubs during the mid-twentieth century and became closely associated with ZTE during its rise through the national leagues.
Between 1998 and 2014, Zalaegerszegi TE adopted a completely redesigned circular badge. The outer blue ring displayed the words ZTE Football Club and Zalaegerszeg, while the centre featured blue-and-white horizontal stripes, the club's traditional colours, together with the founding year 1920. A football appeared above the year, while green vine leaves on either side represented the Zala wine region, one of the defining characteristics of western Hungary. This badge became strongly associated with the club's most successful era, including its historic 2001–02 Hungarian league championship.
Since 2017, the club has returned to a modern interpretation of its historic identity by reintroducing the classic blue triangular pennant. The simplified design features only the bold ZTE monogram in white against a blue background, removing all additional text and decorative elements. Inspired by the club's traditional crest from earlier decades, the minimalist badge reflects ZTE's heritage while presenting a clean and contemporary visual identity.
Zalaegerszegi TE FC Club History
Zalaegerszegi Torna Egylet Football Club (ZTE FC) was founded in 1920 in Zalaegerszeg, western Hungary. Originally established as a multi-sports club, football quickly became its most prominent section. The club adopted the traditional blue and white colours, which have remained its identity throughout more than a century of history. Affectionately known as "Zete," the club has long been the leading football institution in Zala County.
For much of its early history, ZTE competed in regional football before gradually climbing through the Hungarian league system. In 1972, the club achieved promotion to the Nemzeti Bajnokság I (NB I), Hungary's top division, for the first time. From that point onward, ZTE established itself as a regular top-flight club, earning a reputation for developing talented players and consistently challenging more established Hungarian sides.
The club's greatest period of success came at the turn of the twenty-first century. Under coach Péter Bozsik, ZTE won the 2001–02 Hungarian Championship, claiming the first league title in the club's history. The triumph remains the greatest achievement in Zalaegerszegi TE's history and secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
In the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds, ZTE produced one of the most famous results in Hungarian football by defeating Manchester United1–0 in the first leg at the ZTE Arena, thanks to a dramatic last-minute goal by Béla Koplárovics. Although Manchester United overturned the deficit with a 5–0 victory in the return leg at Old Trafford, the victory in Hungary remains one of the club's most celebrated moments and one of the greatest upsets ever achieved by a Hungarian side.
Throughout the 2000s, ZTE remained a competitive force in Hungarian football, regularly finishing in the upper half of the table and qualifying for UEFA competitions. The club also reached the Hungarian Cup Final in 2010, although it was defeated by Debreceni VSC.
Financial difficulties and inconsistent performances eventually led to relegation from NB I in 2012. After several seasons in the second division, ZTE rebuilt the club through investment in youth development and experienced players. The team won the NB II championship in 2018–19, earning promotion back to Hungary's top flight.
The club enjoyed another historic moment in 2022–23 by winning the Hungarian Cup for the first time. ZTE defeated Budapest Honvéd, Puskás Akadémia, and Budapest Vasas on the way to the final before overcoming Budapest Budafok? Correction: in the final, ZTE defeated Budapest Budafok? Actually, ZTE won the final 2–0 against Budafok to secure the club's first major cup triumph, adding a second major national trophy to its honours after the 2002 league title.
ZTE's main rivals include Haladás in the Western Hungary Derby, while matches against Győri ETO FC and Fehérvár FC have also become significant regional fixtures.
