US Boulogne Côte d'Opale Crest History

The original crest of Union Sportive Boulonnaise, used from 1898, reflected the club's maritime identity. The badge featured a quartered black-and-white shield with the initials USB displayed across the top. A detailed fish occupied the lower section, representing Boulogne-sur-Mer's long-standing fishing industry and close relationship with the English Channel. This emblem remained the symbol of the club for more than seventy years and established the maritime identity that would continue throughout its history.

In 1969, following the merger that created Union Sportive du Grand Boulogne (USGB), a new crest was introduced. The badge adopted a red-and-black shield, the colours that remain associated with the club today. At its centre appeared a stylised white swan, inspired by the swans found on the city's coat of arms and serving as a symbol of elegance and local identity. The initials U.S.G.B. were displayed across the top, while Boulogne-sur-Mer appeared beneath. This crest marked the beginning of the club's modern visual identity.

A major redesign followed in 1997, after the club adopted the name U.S. Boulogne Côte d'Opale. The shield became more contemporary, divided vertically into black and red halves. The familiar white swan remained the central element, joined by a football near the upper left and the words "Côte d'Opale" at the bottom, highlighting the club's representation of France's Opal Coast region. The club name appeared across the top, reinforcing the new identity.

In 2009, the crest was refined rather than completely redesigned. The colours became brighter, the typography was modernised, and the proportions of the swan and football were adjusted for a cleaner appearance. Although visually updated, the badge retained the same core symbolism of the swan, football, and the red-and-black colour scheme that had become closely associated with US Boulogne.

In 2025, US Boulogne unveiled a completely new crest inspired by the club's heritage and the city's maritime history. The new shield-shaped badge prominently features a large white swan with outstretched wings, symbolising both the club and the coat of arms of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Three fish appear across the top of the crest, representing the city's historic fishing industry and its strong connection to the sea. The initials USBCO and the founding year 1898 are displayed above the swan, while the traditional red, black, and white colour scheme is retained. The redesign combines historic civic symbols with a bold modern style, creating one of the club's strongest visual identities to date.

US Boulogne Côte d'Opale Club History

Founded in 1898 as Union Sportive Boulonnaise, US Boulogne Côte d'Opale is one of the oldest football clubs in northern France. Based in Boulogne-sur-Mer, a historic port on the English Channel, the club initially competed in regional competitions before becoming one of the leading sides in the Nord–Pas-de-Calais region. Throughout its history, Boulogne has maintained a strong connection with the city's maritime heritage, reflected in both its identity and club symbols.

A major turning point came in 1969, when Union Sportive Boulonnaise merged with local rivals Olympique de Boulogne-sur-Mer to form Union Sportive du Grand Boulogne (USGB). The merger strengthened football in the city by combining resources and talent under a single club. During the following decades, Boulogne gradually established itself as a competitive side in France's semi-professional divisions.

In 1994, the club adopted the name Union Sportive Boulogne Côte d'Opale (USBCO) to better represent the wider Côte d'Opale (Opal Coast) region. The rebranding coincided with growing ambitions to reach professional football.

The club enjoyed its greatest success during the late 2000s. Under coach Philippe Montanier, Boulogne won promotion from the Championnat National in 2007 and achieved another promotion in 2009, reaching Ligue 1 for the first time in its history. Competing against France's biggest clubs during the 2009–10 season was the highest point in the club's sporting history, although Boulogne was relegated after one season.

Following relegation, the club experienced financial and sporting difficulties, spending much of the following decade alternating between Ligue 2, the Championnat National, and the amateur divisions. Despite these setbacks, Boulogne remained a respected club known for its resilience and strong local support at the Stade de la Libération.

In the 2024–25 season, US Boulogne returned to prominence by finishing among the leading teams in the Championnat National, earning a place in the promotion play-offs and demonstrating the club's ambition to return to professional football. Continued investment in youth development and regional talent has helped re-establish Boulogne as one of the strongest clubs on France's northern coast.

US Boulogne's principal rivals are USL Dunkerque in the Côte d'Opale Derby, reflecting the rivalry between the two major coastal clubs of northern France. Matches against Calais RUFC (historically), RC Lens, and Valenciennes FC have also carried regional significance, while encounters with Amiens SC have become competitive through frequent meetings in the French lower divisions.
