Sønderjyske Fodbold Crest History

In 2010, Sønderjyske adopted a unified crest as part of the SønderjyskE Elitesport organisation, which brought together several elite sports teams from Southern Jutland under a common identity. The circular badge featured the two Schleswig lions, historic heraldic symbols of the Southern Jutland region dating back to the thirteenth century, divided across blue and white halves. The words "SønderjyskE Elitesport" surrounded the emblem, emphasising that it represented the entire multi-sport organisation rather than only the football club. 

In 2023, following the separation of the football club from the wider SønderjyskE Elitesport organisation, Sønderjyske Fodbold introduced a new crest created specifically for the football department. The redesigned circular badge placed the two Schleswig lions at its centre without the horizontal division of the previous emblem, while the surrounding ring now displayed the words "Sønderjyske Fodbold." The redesign was created with great respect for the region's history, placing the historic lions even more prominently as symbols of Southern Jutland's identity and heritage. The cleaner, more football-focused badge reflected the club's new organisational independence while maintaining the traditional blue-and-white colours and regional symbolism.

Later in 2023, Sønderjyske Fodbold reached an agreement with SønderjyskE Elitesport allowing the football club to once again use the familiar historic emblem. Rather than continuing with the newly introduced lion-only design, the club reverted to the traditional split blue-and-white badge, now updated with the word "Fodbold" replacing "Elitesport" in the lower section. The updated crest returned to official use for the 2025 season and remains Sønderjyske Fodbold's badge today, combining continuity with the club's new independent identity.

Sønderjyske Fodbold Club History

Founded on 1 January 2004, Sønderjyske Fodbold was established as the football division of the newly created Sønderjysk Elitesport, a regional sports organisation designed to unite Southern Jutland's leading teams in football, handball and ice hockey under one identity. Although the club officially dates from 2004, its football roots stretch back to Haderslev Fodboldklub (HFK), founded on 14 July 1906. HFK had reached the Danish Superliga for the first time in 2000 under the name HFK Sønderjylland, before becoming part of the regional SønderjyskE project in 2004.

Success came quickly. In its first full season as SønderjyskE Fodbold, the club won the 2004–05 Danish 1st Division and secured promotion to the Danish Superliga. Although immediately relegated, Sønderjyske returned to the top flight in 2008 and gradually established itself as a competitive Superliga club. Under coaches such as Niels Frederiksen, the team recorded its best-ever league finishes, regularly challenging for the top half of the table and qualifying for European competition for the first time in its history.

The greatest achievement in the club's history came during the 2019–20 season when Sønderjyske won its first major trophy, defeating AaB 2–0 in the Danish Cup Final. The triumph secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League, marking a historic milestone for the club and for football in Southern Jutland. Throughout this period, Sønderjyske earned widespread respect for consistently competing against clubs with significantly larger budgets while maintaining a strong regional identity and developing talented Danish players.

In 2022, the football club separated administratively from the wider SønderjyskE Elitesport organisation and adopted the name Sønderjyske Fodbold, while continuing to represent the entire Southern Jutland region. After suffering relegation in 2022–23, the club responded immediately by winning promotion back to the Danish Superliga, demonstrating the resilience that has become one of its defining characteristics. 

Sønderjyske's biggest rivalry is with Esbjerg fB, a fixture often referred to as the South Jutland Derby, fuelled by geographical proximity and years of competitive meetings between two of western Denmark's traditional clubs. Matches against Vejle Boldklub and FC Fredericia also carry regional significance, although none has consistently matched the intensity of encounters with Esbjerg.
