The Ground
New Douglas Park, home of Hamilton Academical FC, sits at the edge of Hamilton town centre, just south-east of Glasgow. Since opening in 2001, it has been the proud home of one of Scotland’s oldest clubs, founded in 1874. Although modest in size compared to some of the country’s larger arenas, New Douglas Park embodies the resilience and community spirit that defines “The Accies.”
Built adjacent to the site of the original Douglas Park (the club’s home from 1888 to 1994), the modern stadium was developed after financial hardship threatened the club’s existence. Its construction symbolised rebirth, a fresh chapter for a historic side that has long punched above its weight in Scottish football.
The ground features a compact, modern layout with four stands, including the covered West Stand (main stand), which houses hospitality suites, directors’ boxes, and media facilities. Behind one goal stands a smaller seated section traditionally housing visiting supporters, while the other end often accommodates home fans and youth groups. The tight, enclosed design keeps supporters close to the pitch, helping generate atmosphere despite the stadium’s smaller capacity.
On matchdays, New Douglas Park has a close-knit, community feel. Supporters, many lifelong fans, gather in maroon and white, creating an intimate but passionate setting. When the Accies are flying, the noise carries sharply across the pitch, particularly during derby matches against nearby rivals.
While it may lack the vast scale of some Scottish grounds, it offers authenticity and accessibility. It remains central to Hamilton’s sporting identity and continues to host league fixtures, cup matches, and community events throughout the year.
