The Ground

Cappielow Park, set against the River Clyde in the heart of Greenock, has been the home of Greenock Morton FC since 1879. One of the oldest continually used football grounds in the world, Cappielow is steeped in tradition, embodying the resilience, pride, and close-knit spirit of Inverclyde’s football culture.

With a capacity of just over 11,000, Cappielow retains an unmistakably traditional British football character. The ground is defined by its four distinct stands, each with its own personality. The James Watt Stand, the main stand along Sinclair Street, anchors the stadium and houses club offices and hospitality, while the Cowshed, perhaps the most famous part of Cappielow, is synonymous with the club’s most vocal support. Steeply terraced and tight to the pitch, it ensures players are never far from the roar of the faithful. Opposite, the Sinclair Street Stand and the Wee Dublin End complete a compact, enclosed arena that keeps the atmosphere intense and intimate.

On matchdays, Cappielow crackles with raw, authentic football energy. Morton supporters pack the stands with blue and white scarves, voices echoing across the Clyde as chants roll down from the terraces. The closeness of the pitch draws fans and players into a shared experience, every tackle is felt, every goal celebrated with unfiltered emotion. There is a sense at Cappielow that football here is still played and watched the old way: honest, passionate, and deeply personal.

Located just a short walk from Greenock town centre, Cappielow is easy to reach. Greenock Central railway station lies nearby, providing direct links to Glasgow, while local buses serve Sinclair Street regularly. For those travelling by car, access from the A8 and surrounding road network is straightforward, with street parking available around the ground. Framed by cranes, hills, and the river beyond, Cappielow Park is a uniquely Scottish football venue, gritty, historic, and fiercely loved.

Before and After the Match

  • The Norseman Bar (Nelson Street). The classic pre-match stop for Morton fans and just a short walk from Cappielow. Expect navy-and-white scarves, match predictions over pints of Tennent’s, and that unmistakable west coast humour flowing freely. It fills steadily from an hour before kick-off and is the safest bet for soaking up local matchday culture.

  • The Old Bank Bar (Cathcart Street). Closer to Greenock town centre, this friendly and traditional pub is popular with home supporters before making the short walk down to Sinclair Street. A solid option if you’re arriving by train at Greenock Central.

  • The James Watt (Cathcart Square). Part of the Wetherspoons chain and convenient for travelling supporters arriving via Greenock Central railway station. Spacious, affordable, and a comfortable base before walking 15–20 minutes to the stadium.

  • The George Bar (George Road). A proper local pub with strong community ties — compact, welcoming, and very much a “regulars” spot. You’ll hear plenty of Morton chat in here on matchdays.

  • The Beacon Arts Centre Café & Bar (Custom House Quay). For something more relaxed with waterfront views over the Clyde, this is a good pre-match coffee or food option before making your way to Cappielow.
