The Ground
Signal Iduna Park, traditionally known as Westfalenstadion, is one of the most iconic and atmospheric football stadiums in the world. Located in Dortmund, Germany, it has been the proud home of Borussia Dortmund since 1974.
With a capacity of 81,365, Signal Iduna Park is the largest football stadium in Germany. Renowned for its electrifying matchday atmosphere, the stadium is famous for the legendary Südtribüne, or "Yellow Wall", the largest single-tier standing terrace in European football. Holding over 24,000 supporters, the Yellow Wall creates an unforgettable spectacle of colour, noise, and passion that has earned worldwide recognition.
The stadium's design combines tradition with continuous modernisation. Originally opened as Westfalenstadion for the 1974 FIFA World Cup, it has undergone several major expansions and renovations, including the addition of its distinctive yellow corner pylons and expanded seating for major international competitions. Despite these developments, Signal Iduna Park has retained its unique character and close connection between supporters and the pitch, making it one of the most intimidating venues for visiting teams.
Beyond football, Signal Iduna Park is a landmark of Dortmund and German sport. Visitors can experience the Borussia Dortmund Stadium Tour and the Borusseum, the club's official museum, which showcases the rich history of Borussia Dortmund, from its foundation in 1909 to its Bundesliga triumphs, UEFA Champions League victory in 1997, and domestic cup successes. Fans can walk through the players' tunnel, visit the dressing rooms, explore the Yellow Wall from pitch level, and gain behind-the-scenes access to one of Europe's most historic and passionately supported football clubs.

Check the pre-sale dates. Borussia Dortmund releases tickets in stages: Club members get priority access. General public sales (when available) usually begin 4–6 weeks before the match. Popular fixtures often sell out within minutes.
Consider becoming a club member. For high-demand matches (such as against FC Bayern Munich or major Champions League games), membership gives you: earlier access to ticket sales, a much better chance of securing tickets, access to exclusive member allocations. Membership does not guarantee a ticket, but it significantly improves your chances.
Use the Official Secondary Market. If a match sells out, don't panic. Season ticket holders can legally resell their seats through Borussia Dortmund's official secondary market, which is integrated into the ticket shop. This is the safest way to buy resale tickets.

How to get to the Stadium
Via Train
Regional train. From Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, take a regional train (RB52, RB53 or RB59) to Dortmund Signal-Iduna-Park station. The journey takes about 5 minutes. From the station, it's a 2–5 minute walk to the stadium. On Borussia Dortmund home matchdays, additional special trains also stop here to handle the large crowds
U-Bahn (light rail). You can also use Dortmund's Stadtbahn: U45 → Get off at Stadion (a station that operates on matchdays) or Westfalenhallen. U46 → Get off at Stadion (matchdays) or Westfalenhallen. U42 → Get off at Theodor-Fliedner-Heim and walk around 10–15 minutes to the stadium.
Walking from Dortmund Central Station. If the weather is nice, you can also walk: Distance: Approximately 3 km. Walking time: 30–40 minutes. Many supporters make this walk before matches, creating a lively pre-match atmosphere.
By Car
From the north: A1 → Dortmund/Unna junction → A44/B1 towards Dortmund. From the east: A2 → Dortmund-Nordost junction → B236 → B1 towards Dortmund. From the south: A45 → Dortmund-Süd junction → B54 towards Dortmund. From the west: A40/B1 towards Dortmund
Parking. There are more than 10,000 paid parking spaces around Signal Iduna Park and the nearby Westfalenhallen exhibition centre. Parking permits should be purchased online in advance, as many car parks are permit-only on matchdays. Some of the main official parking areas include: Parking A8 of the Westfalenhallen. Parking C1. Parking C2. Parking Lot D1. Park & Ride. If you want to avoid heavy traffic around the stadium, consider using one of Dortmund's Park & Ride (P+R) facilities. You can park outside the city centre and complete your journey by tram or train, which is often the quickest option on busy matchdays. Arrive at least 2–3 hours before kick-off. Expect delays when leaving after the match, as some car park exits remain temporarily closed to allow pedestrians to leave safely.

Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), Best for international flights
Distance: 65 km. Travel Time: Take a direct train from Düsseldorf Airport station to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof.Journey time is typically 50–70 minutes. Then continue to Signal Iduna Park by regional train or tram.
Dortmund Airport (DTM), Best option
Distance: 13 km. Travel Time: 30–40 minutes. Take the AirportExpress or AirportShuttle to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof (Central Station). From there, take a regional train or tram to Signal Iduna Park.
Around the Stadium
Before and After the Match
Strobel's Bar (Strobelallee). One of the most popular meeting places for Borussia Dortmund supporters, located directly opposite Signal Iduna Park. Packed with fans before and after matches, it offers a lively atmosphere, German beers, and classic pub food just steps from the stadium.
Mit Schmackes (Hohe Straße). A well-known restaurant and sports bar owned by former Borussia Dortmund captain Kevin Großkreutz. Around a 20-minute walk from the stadium, it's a favourite with both locals and visitors, serving traditional German dishes and showcasing BVB memorabilia.
BVB FanWelt (Strobelallee). The club's official megastore next to Signal Iduna Park. On matchdays, the area outside becomes a hub of activity where supporters gather before kick-off. It's the perfect place to buy official merchandise, have shirts personalised, and soak up the pre-match atmosphere.
Rote Erde Stadium Area. Located beside Signal Iduna Park, the historic Stadion Rote Erde is surrounded by food stalls, beer stands, and fan gathering points on matchdays. Many supporters meet here before making their way into the stadium, creating an authentic Borussia Dortmund experience.
Westfalenhallen Plaza. The large plaza between the Westfalenhallen exhibition centre and the stadium fills with thousands of supporters before kick-off. Temporary food vendors, beer stalls, and entertainment make it one of the busiest meeting points around the ground.
Wenkers am Markt (Alter Markt). Situated in Dortmund's historic city centre, this traditional brewery restaurant is popular with fans arriving early. Famous for its locally brewed beer and hearty German cuisine, it's an excellent place to experience Dortmund's football culture before heading to the stadium.
Brauhaus Wenkers (Alter Markt). One of Dortmund's best-known traditional beer halls, attracting both locals and travelling supporters. Its central location makes it an ideal stop before taking the U-Bahn or regional train to Signal Iduna Park.
Zum Alten Markt (Alter Markt). Located in Dortmund's historic market square, this long-established restaurant and pub is a favourite meeting place for supporters. It offers regional specialities, local beers, and a vibrant atmosphere throughout matchdays before fans make their way to the stadium.
