The Ground
Hillsborough, nestled in the Owlerton district of Sheffield, has been the proud home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club since 1899. One of the most historic stadiums in England, it has hosted World Cup matches, FA Cup semi-finals, and generations of unforgettable Wednesday moments.
With a current capacity of around 39,700, Hillsborough combines old-school charm with the roar of one of the country’s most passionate fanbases. Its four stands — the Kop, North Stand, South Stand, and Grandstand (West) — are steeped in tradition, with the Kop particularly famous for its booming Wednesdayite support.
Hillsborough’s story is one of evolution. Built at the turn of the 20th century, the ground has undergone major redevelopments across the decades, from terracing expansions to all-seater conversions in the 1990s. While modernised in key areas, it retains its identity as a traditional English football ground, woven deeply into the fabric of Sheffield life. It is also remembered as the scene of the Hillsborough disaster on 15 April 1989, when 97 Liverpool fans tragically lost their lives during an FA Cup semi-final. The subsequent Taylor Report reshaped stadium safety across England, introducing all-seater grounds and removing perimeter fencing, changes that defined a new era for football supporters nationwide.

Around the Stadium
Before and After the Match
The Wednesday Tap (Penistone Road). The official Wednesday supporters’ bar, located right by the ground. Modern, decked out in club colours, and always full of Owls on matchdays. It’s the closest you’ll get to a fanzone, with plenty of beer flowing and a buzzing pre-match atmosphere.
The New Barrack Tavern (Penistone Road). Just a short walk from Hillsborough, this traditional alehouse is hugely popular with Wednesdayites. Known for its real ales and football buzz, it’s rammed before games with chants and pints in equal measure.
The Rawson Spring (Langsett Road). A Wetherspoons pub about 10 minutes from the ground. Spacious, cheap, and always packed with fans in blue and white. Perfect for big groups looking for affordable pints and an easy pre-match base.
The New Bridge Inn (Penistone Road). Another classic Wednesday pub right near Hillsborough. Loud, packed, and full of locals, it offers that traditional football pub experience with a proper old-school feel.
The Hillsborough Hotel (Langsett Road). Part pub, part hotel, this spot has its own microbrewery and is popular with fans who want something more laid-back before the game. A good choice if you’re staying nearby and want a quality pint with a calmer build-up.
The Riverside (Mowbray Street, Kelham Island). About a 20-minute walk (or a quick tram ride) from the ground, this riverside pub is known for its craft ales and big beer garden. Popular with both locals and travelling supporters, it’s a lively but slightly less intense option before heading to the Kop.
The Cuthbert Brodrick (City Centre, Wetherspoons). Often used as a meeting point for fans coming in by train. With plenty of space and screens for the early kick-offs, it’s a good starting spot before hopping on the tram to Leppings Lane.
The Gardeners Rest (Neepsend, Kelham Island). A community pub a little further out, known for its quirky decor and wide beer selection. More relaxed than the hardcore Wednesday pubs by the ground, but still popular with matchgoing Owls.
