The Ground
Vale Park, located on Hamil Road in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, has been the home of Port Vale Football Club since 1950. Unlike many of the compact grounds rooted in Victorian or Edwardian history, Vale Park was conceived as an ambitious post-war project, earning the nickname “The Wembley of the North” for its grand design and modern aspirations at the time.
The stadium has seen a steady programme of redevelopment over the decades, balancing improvements in safety and comfort with the preservation of its distinctive character. Its most prominent feature is the Lorne Street Stand, a large and partially redeveloped structure that dominates one side of the ground, offering a mix of executive facilities and modern seating. Around the rest of the stadium, stands vary in scale and style, reflecting the incremental upgrades of different eras. The result is an asymmetric, slightly idiosyncratic layout that nonetheless provides an intimate matchday atmosphere, particularly when the ground is full and vocal.
Today, Vale Park remains owned and operated by Port Vale FC, standing as both the club’s home ground and a central landmark for the Burslem community. The current all-seated capacity is around 15,000, a figure that aligns with the club’s traditional position in the lower divisions of the Football League, while still offering scope for large attendances during major fixtures.
While it does not have the sleek bowl design or commercial infrastructure of more modern builds, Vale Park continues to embody the identity and resilience of Port Vale. Set slightly apart from the town centre, it carries with it the heritage of mid-20th century ambition, and for supporters it represents something deeply personal: a place of continuity, belonging, and the enduring spirit of the club. For visitors, it provides a quintessentially English football experience—at once historic, idiosyncratic, and inseparable from the community it serves.
