Capacity: 30,311

Location: Portman Road, Ipswich

The Ground

  • Portman Road, located in the heart of Ipswich, Suffolk, has been the home of Ipswich Town Football Club since 1884. As one of the oldest professional football grounds in England still in continuous use, it represents the heritage and tradition of English football—offering a classic stadium experience that contrasts sharply with the sleek, purpose-built arenas of more recent decades.

  • Originally a multi-purpose ground shared with cricket, Portman Road evolved over time into a dedicated football venue. It underwent major redevelopment in the 1990s and early 2000s, with the construction of the Cobbold Stand and the Greene King Stand, bringing modern comfort to a historically rich setting. The stadium features a mix of two-tier and single-tier seating, and retains an unmistakable character with tight sightlines, vocal support, and an atmosphere steeped in football history.

  • Today, Portman Road is owned and operated by Ipswich Town FC, with a current all-seated capacity of just over 29,000. Though traditional in layout, the stadium includes modern hospitality lounges, fan zones, and a club shop, blending the old and new in a way that reflects the club’s ambition and proud roots.

  • Unlike newer stadiums situated on the outskirts of cities, Portman Road is embedded within the fabric of Ipswich itself, just minutes from the railway station and surrounded by pubs, shops, and urban life. Its location allows fans to walk from the town centre straight into the ground, making matchdays a communal experience for both locals and visiting supporters.
