The Ground

  • St. Andrew’s, located in the Bordesley district of Birmingham, West Midlands, has been the home of Birmingham City Football Club since 1906. Steeped in over a century of footballing heritage, it stands as one of England’s most historic grounds.

  • The stadium officially opened on 26 December 1906, replacing the club’s former Muntz Street ground, which had become too small for its growing support. Built on the site of former brickworks, St. Andrew’s was considered cutting-edge for its time, boasting large open terraces and a main stand that helped accommodate crowds of up to 75,000 in its early decades. Over the years, it has witnessed FA Cup semi-finals, European nights, and the club’s most celebrated moments, while also enduring challenges such as wartime bomb damage and a major stand fire.

  • Following the Taylor Report in the 1990s, St. Andrew’s underwent a major transformation. Between 1993 and 1999, the ground was redeveloped into an all-seater stadium, improving safety, comfort, and accessibility. The Kop, Tilton Road, and Gil Merrick stands now wrap around the pitch in a modern horseshoe shape. Its current all-seated capacity is 29,409.
