The Ground

Palmerston Park, tucked into the heart of Dumfries, has been the home of Queen of the South F.C. since 1919. While more modest in scale than some of Scotland’s grander arenas, it carries a deep sense of identity and tradition, serving as a proud focal point for football in the south-west of the country. For supporters of the Doonhamers, Palmerston is more than just a ground, it is a place where community spirit and club heritage come together.

With a capacity of just under 9,000, the stadium offers a more intimate and close-knit matchday experience. The Main Stand, running along the touchline on Terregles Street, provides the bulk of the seating and houses the club’s key facilities. Opposite, the open terracing and smaller stands bring fans closer to the pitch, ensuring that every chant and cheer carries across the ground. This compact layout helps create an atmosphere that feels personal and intense, particularly during big fixtures and local rivalries.

Despite its traditional feel, Palmerston has seen gradual improvements over the years, balancing modern requirements with its historic roots. It remains a working football ground in the truest sense, functional, welcoming, and deeply connected to its local community. Beyond matchdays, it serves as a hub for club activities and local engagement, reinforcing its place at the centre of life in Dumfries.

Around the Stadium

Before and After the Match

  • The Cavens Arms (Buccleuch Street). A favourite with home supporters, just a short walk from the town centre. Expect a lively atmosphere on matchdays, football chat, and a strong local crowd gathering before heading to Palmerston.

  • The Robert the Bruce (High Street). A classic Wetherspoon-style pub in the heart of Dumfries. Popular for its cheap pints, big space, and screens showing live sport. Ideal meeting point before the walk to the ground.

  • The The Globe Inn (High Street). One of the town’s most historic pubs, linked to Robert Burns. Offers a more traditional and relaxed pre-match pint with plenty of character.

  • The The Cavens Arms Hotel Bar. A slightly quieter option compared to the busier pubs, good for those wanting a calmer drink before kickoff.

  • The The Frothy Bike Co. Craft beer bar with a modern feel. Not strictly a football pub, but popular with younger fans and those wanting something different pre-match.
