The Ground
Meadowbank Stadium, standing proudly on London Road to the east of Edinburgh’s city centre, has long been a cornerstone of Scottish sport and community life. Originally opened in 1960 and later redeveloped to host the 1970 Commonwealth Games, Meadowbank became synonymous with athletics, football, and multi-sport activity. For decades, it served not only as the home of Meadowbank Thistle and, later, Edinburgh City FC, but also as a venue where generations of locals gathered to compete, train, and cheer — a place where Edinburgh’s sporting spirit came alive.
Though smaller and more modest than some of Scotland’s great football arenas, Meadowbank carries a distinct charm rooted in versatility and inclusivity. Its open stands, athletics track, and broad sightlines created a uniquely communal atmosphere, one that blended the energy of football with the dynamism of track and field. The ground became an incubator for grassroots sport, while also hosting elite competition, concerts, and civic events. To countless athletes, it was both a proving ground and a symbol of opportunity.
Over the years, Meadowbank underwent several transformations, most notably a major redevelopment beginning in 2017, which ushered in a new era for the site. The new Meadowbank Sports Centre, opened in 2022, offers state-of-the-art facilities while preserving the legacy of its predecessor. Modern stands and all-weather pitches now sit alongside gyms, halls, and community spaces, ensuring the venue remains a hub not just for football, but for the full spectrum of sport and wellbeing.
Meadowbank’s location gives it a character all its own. Nestled beside Holyrood Park and Arthur’s Seat, the stadium’s setting links the vibrancy of the city with the rugged beauty of Edinburgh’s natural landscape. Easily accessible by bus and within walking distance of the city centre, it continues to attract both loyal supporters and casual visitors. On matchdays, the ground hums with anticipation, the sound carrying down London Road and into the surrounding streets — proof that Meadowbank remains, in every sense, a stadium of the people.
