The Ground
The Hawthorns, located on the border of West Bromwich and Handsworth in the West Midlands, has been the home of West Bromwich Albion Football Club since 1900.
The stadium officially opened in September 1900, replacing the club’s previous home at Stoney Lane. Built on former farmland in a matter of months, it was named after the hawthorn bushes that once covered the site. Remarkably, it is the highest stadium above sea level in English professional football, sitting 551 feet (168 m) up, which has long been part of its identity.
Over the decades, The Hawthorns has evolved to meet the needs of the modern game while preserving its heritage. Once capable of hosting more than 60,000 spectators in its terraced heyday, it was converted into an all-seater venue in the 1990s following the Taylor Report. Today, it features four distinct stands — the Birmingham Road End, Smethwick End, East Stand, and West Stand. The current all-seated capacity stands at approximately 26,850.
Today, The Hawthorns remains owned and operated by West Bromwich Albion, serving as both the club’s home and a focal point for the local community. Its location benefits from excellent transport links, with The Hawthorns railway and tram station just a short walk away, making it one of the easiest grounds to reach in the country.
