The Ground
The Stadium of Light, standing proudly on the banks of the River Wear, has been the home of Sunderland A.F.C. since its opening in 1997. Built on the site of the former Monkwearmouth Colliery, the ground is steeped in symbolism, linking the club’s proud mining heritage with its modern ambitions.
With a capacity of just under 49,000, it is one of the largest football grounds in England outside the Premier League. On matchdays, the stadium reverberates with the passion of Sunderland’s famously loyal support, creating an atmosphere that can be both intimidating and inspiring. Each stand carries its own significance: the West Stand houses the dugouts, hospitality, and club offices; the East Stand mirrors it opposite, rising steeply over the pitch; the North Stand has long been a gathering place for the club’s most vocal fans, their chants echoing across the river; while the South Stand, home to the away allocation, ensures a charged, competitive edge. Together, they form a ground where noise and colour combine to make every match an occasion.
Since its opening, the Stadium of Light has undergone several improvements, including expanded capacity in the early 2000s and modernised facilities that make it one of the most accessible and fan-friendly venues in the country.
Situated close to Sunderland city centre, the ground is easy to reach by road, rail, or even on foot across the Wearmouth Bridge. The nearby Metro station at St. Peter’s places it within minutes of the city’s wider transport network, making access straightforward for both home and visiting supporters. On matchdays, the streets, pubs, and cafes around the stadium come alive in red and white, reflecting the pride of a city whose identity is forever tied to its football club.
