The Ground
St Mary’s Stadium, located in the St Mary’s district of Southampton, Hampshire, has been the home of Southampton Football Club since 2001. Unlike the club’s former ground, The Dell, which was known for its tight and idiosyncratic setting, St Mary’s is a purpose-built, modern stadium.
The stadium officially opened in August 2001, replacing The Dell as Southampton’s new home after over a century. Built on the site of a former gasworks, the move to St Mary’s marked a significant step forward, providing vastly improved capacity and facilities. The club named the ground in honour of its origins as St. Mary’s YMA (Young Men’s Association) in 1885, keeping a symbolic link to its historic roots.
Today, St Mary’s Stadium is fully owned and operated by Southampton FC and has become an integral part of the city’s skyline and identity. With a current seating capacity of approximately 32,384, it is the largest football stadium in the South of England outside London. While modern in design, it has steadily built its own character. The most passionate fans gather in Northam Stand.
The stadium features a bowl-style structure, with four continuous stands offering unobstructed views from every seat. While lacking some of the historical quirks of older grounds, it offers excellent facilities, clean sightlines, and a comfortable matchday experience.
