The Ground
The Memorial Stadium, commonly known as The Mem, is located in the Horfield area of north Bristol and has been the home of Bristol Rovers Football Club since 1996. Originally built to commemorate the rugby players of Bristol who lost their lives in World War I, the ground has a rich history rooted in both rugby and football.
The stadium first opened in 1921 and served for many decades as the home of Bristol Rugby Club. It wasn’t until 1996 that Bristol Rovers made the Memorial Stadium their permanent home after leaving Eastville Stadium. Since then, the venue has gradually adapted to meet the needs of professional football, although it retains many features from its earlier rugby days.
Today, The Mem is owned and operated by Bristol Rovers FC, and continues to evolve. While it lacks the modern infrastructure of newer grounds, it is known for its intimate, traditional football feel and the close proximity of fans to the pitch. With a current capacity of around 10,800, it ranks among the smaller grounds in English professional football, but often generates a loud and passionate atmosphere—especially from the vocal Thatchers Terrace, which houses many of the club’s most loyal supporters.
The ground consists of a mix of seated stands and terracing, including the West Stand (Main Stand) and the newer South Stand, introduced to increase seated capacity in recent years. Although it has seen various renovation efforts, including temporary structures and modular upgrades, there are ongoing discussions around potential stadium redevelopment or relocation to better accommodate the club’s ambitions.
