The crest history of FC Chornomorets Odesa is strongly connected to the maritime identity of Odesa, one of Ukraine's most important Black Sea port cities. Throughout its evolution, the club has repeatedly used nautical imagery, waves and blue colours, reflecting its famous nickname “Moryaky” (The Sailors).
Between 1959 and 1990, Chornomorets used a distinctive circular maritime emblem. A red-and-white football appeared above stylised waves, surrounded by the outline of a ship's wheel. Beneath the design appeared the Cyrillic name “Черноморец Одесса” (Chornomorets Odesa). The combination of the wheel and waves established the nautical theme that would remain central to the club's identity.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of independent Ukrainian football, Chornomorets introduced a completely redesigned crest in 1991. The circular badge was replaced by a traditional shield, divided into white and dark blue sections.
At the centre of the 1991–2004 crest was a large football, while a stylised seagull appeared above it. The seagull provided another direct connection with Odesa's coastal location on the Black Sea. A ribbon beneath the shield displayed “ФК Чорноморець” (FC Chornomorets) together with the year 1959, which at the time was prominently associated with the club's Chornomorets identity.
In 2004, the crest was modernised while retaining almost all of its established elements. The shield became cleaner and lighter, with blue and white becoming more prominent. The football remained at the centre, the seagull continued above it and the club name remained on the banner underneath.
One particularly important change was the historical date displayed on the modern crest. The earlier 1959 reference was replaced by 1936, reflecting the club's recognition of its deeper institutional origins and the history from which the modern Chornomorets developed.
The current crest therefore combines several symbols representing both club and city: the blue and white colours reflect Chornomorets' traditional identity, the seagull represents Odesa's Black Sea location, and the central football emphasises the club's sporting heritage.
FC Chornomorets Odesa Club History
Founded in 1936, FC Chornomorets Odesa is one of Ukraine’s most historic football clubs and the leading football representative of the Black Sea port city of Odesa. The club developed through several predecessor teams and name changes during the Soviet era before eventually adopting the name Chornomorets, meaning “Black Sea man” or “Black Sea sailor.” This maritime connection also gave rise to the club’s famous nickname, “Moryaky” (The Sailors).
During its early decades, the club competed under names including Dynamo Odesa, Kharchovyk and Spartak Odesa. In 1958, the team became known as Chornomorets Odesa, establishing the identity that has remained associated with the club ever since.
Chornomorets became a regular participant in the higher levels of Soviet football and enjoyed some of its greatest success during the 1970s. In 1974, the club finished third in the Soviet Top League, the highest league position in its Soviet history. The achievement qualified Chornomorets for European competition and established the Odesa club among the strongest teams in the Soviet Union.
Another major trophy arrived in 1990, when Chornomorets won the USSR Federation Cup. It proved to be one of the final major honours of the Soviet era before Ukraine became independent the following year.
Following Ukrainian independence in 1991, Chornomorets became one of the founding members of the new Ukrainian Premier League. The early years of independent Ukrainian football proved particularly successful for the club. Chornomorets won the Ukrainian Cup in 1992, becoming the first winner of the competition after independence, and lifted the trophy again in 1994.
During the 1990s, Chornomorets regularly challenged near the top of the Ukrainian league. The club finished second in 1994–95 and 1995–96, while also achieving several third-place finishes. This period established Chornomorets as one of the principal challengers to the growing dominance of Dynamo Kyiv.
The club has also enjoyed a long history in European competition, participating in tournaments including the UEFA Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup and Europa League. One of its strongest modern European campaigns came in 2013–14, when Chornomorets reached the knockout stage of the UEFA Europa League after progressing through a group containing PSV Eindhoven, Dinamo Zagreb and Ludogorets Razgrad.
Domestically, Chornomorets also reached the Ukrainian Cup final in 2013, helping return the club to European competition and marking one of the strongest periods of its modern history.
Chornomorets plays at the Chornomorets Stadium, located in Shevchenko Park close to the Black Sea coast in central Odesa. The present stadium opened in 2011, replacing the older ground on the same site, and remains one of the most recognisable football venues in Ukraine.
The club’s history has been considerably affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine beginning in 2022. Odesa has repeatedly been subjected to missile and drone attacks, creating extremely difficult circumstances for everyday life and professional sport. Despite these conditions, Chornomorets has continued to represent the city in Ukrainian football.
