The crest of União Desportiva de Leiria has always reflected the club's close connection with the city of Leiria.
The original crest, introduced in 1966, featured a traditional shield displaying the initials "UDL" above an illustration of Leiria Castle, one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. The lower section incorporated the colours and symbols of the municipality, including the red-and-white chequered pattern and the fleur-de-lis, creating a badge that proudly represented both the club and the city. This emblem remained in use for an impressive 57 years, becoming synonymous with União de Leiria's rise through Portuguese football.
In 2023, the club introduced its first major redesign. The historic shield was placed inside a modern circular badge surrounded by a bold red ring carrying the words "União de Leiria" and the club's founding year, 1966. The redesign modernised the club's identity while keeping the traditional shield and castle at its heart.
Only a year later, in 2024, União de Leiria unveiled another updated crest. While retaining the circular format, the club introduced a more detailed and contemporary illustration of Leiria Castle, together with cleaner typography and the words "União de Leiria Portugal." The updated badge offers a stronger visual identity and further emphasises the club's connection to its city and country, while preserving the historic colours and municipal symbols that have defined the club since its foundation.
UD Leiria Club History
Founded in 1966, União Desportiva de Leiria is one of the most prominent football clubs in central Portugal. Based in the historic city of Leiria, the club was formed through the merger of local football organisations with the aim of creating a team capable of competing at the highest national level. Wearing its traditional red and white colours, União de Leiria has become an important representative of the Leiria region.
After spending its early years in the lower divisions, the club steadily climbed the Portuguese football pyramid and reached the Primeira Divisão for the first time in 1979. Although its initial stay in the top flight was brief, Leiria established itself as a competitive professional club and continued to develop both on and off the pitch.
The club enjoyed its greatest success during the late 1990s and 2000s, becoming a regular member of the Primeira Liga. Under respected coaches such as Manuel José and later José Mourinho, who briefly managed the club in 2001–02, União de Leiria earned a reputation for organised, attractive football. The club regularly finished in the top half of the league and qualified for the UEFA Cup on several occasions, with a best league finish of fifth place in the 2000–01 season.
In preparation for UEFA Euro 2004, Leiria became home to the impressive Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa, a modern stadium that hosted matches during the tournament. The new venue marked a significant milestone in the club's history and remains one of Portugal's finest football stadiums.
Despite its sporting achievements, União de Leiria encountered severe financial difficulties during the early 2010s. Mounting debts led to administrative problems, player departures and eventual relegation. In 2012, the club was forced to withdraw from professional football, marking the lowest point in its history.
Today, União de Leiria competes once again at a professional level and continues its pursuit of a return to the Primeira Liga. União de Leiria's main rivals are Académica de Coimbra and A.C. Marinhense, with regional fixtures against U.D. Santarém and Naval 1º de Maio also carrying local significance. During their successful Primeira Liga years, matches against Belenenses developed into competitive contests for league position.
