Sporting CP Crest History
The crest of Sporting Clube de Portugal is one of the most recognisable in world football and has always revolved around the club's most enduring symbol: the lion. Throughout more than a century of history, Sporting has modernised its badge several times while consistently preserving its green-and-white identity and proud heritage.
The club's first crest, introduced in 1907, featured a white lion rampant inside a simple green circular badge. Inspired by the coat of arms of the club's founder, José Alvalade, the lion symbolised courage, nobility and ambition. This elegant emblem established the animal that would become Sporting's defining symbol.
In 1935, the club unveiled a new crest that remained in use for more than sixty-five years. The circular design was retained, but the lion was placed inside a decorative shield beneath the initials "SCP." This version strengthened the club's visual identity and became closely associated with Sporting's rise as one of Portugal's "Big Three."
A major redesign arrived in 2002. Sporting adopted a modern shield featuring green-and-white horizontal stripes, a golden lion inside a central shield, and the words "Sporting Portugal." The streamlined design reflected a new era for the club while preserving its traditional colours and symbolism. This badge accompanied Sporting into the twenty-first century and became recognised worldwide.
In 2018, the crest underwent subtle refinements. The proportions were adjusted, the typography modernised, and the lion redrawn with cleaner lines to improve clarity across digital platforms and merchandising. The overall concept remained unchanged, ensuring continuity with the successful 2002 redesign.
The most significant change in recent years came in 2026, when Sporting introduced a simplified visual identity. The current crest returns to a more classic appearance by removing the striped shield and focusing on a green-and-white shield featuring the iconic lion, with the initials "SCP" prominently displayed above. The minimalist design pays tribute to the club's historic emblems while embracing a clean, contemporary style.

Sporting CP Club History
Founded in 1906, Sporting Clube de Portugal is one of the most successful and influential football clubs in Portuguese history. Based in Lisbon, Sporting was established with the ambition of becoming "as great as the greatest clubs in Europe," a vision set by founder José Alvalade that continues to define the club today. Wearing its famous green and white colours, Sporting has become one of Portugal's "Big Three" alongside S.L. Benfica and F.C. Porto.
From its earliest years, Sporting quickly established itself as one of Portugal's leading clubs. During the first half of the twentieth century, the club won numerous regional and national titles, laying the foundations for decades of domestic success. Sporting became particularly dominant during the 1940s, when the legendary forward line known as "Os Cinco Violinos" (The Five Violins) led the club to multiple league championships while playing some of the most attractive football ever seen in Portugal.
Throughout its history, Sporting has remained one of the country's most decorated clubs, winning numerous Primeira Liga championships, Taça de Portugal trophies and Taça da Liga titles. The club is also renowned for its success in European competition, highlighted by winning the 1963–64 European Cup Winners' Cup, defeating MTK Budapest in a memorable replay. It remains Sporting's greatest achievement on the international stage.
Sporting is widely regarded as one of the world's finest producers of football talent. The club's famous Academia Cristiano Ronaldo, formerly known as the Sporting Academy, has developed an extraordinary number of elite players. Graduates include Cristiano Ronaldo, Luís Figo, Paulo Futre, Ricardo Quaresma, João Moutinho, Nani, Rui Patrício, and Bruno Fernandes, making Sporting one of the most respected youth development clubs in world football.
After periods of domestic dominance and occasional frustration, Sporting returned to the top of Portuguese football by winning the Primeira Liga title in 2020–21, ending a 19-year championship drought. Under coach Rúben Amorim, the club combined exciting young talent with tactical discipline to reclaim its place among Portugal's elite. Sporting added further league titles in the years that followed, reinforcing its status as a modern powerhouse.
Since 2003, Sporting has played at the modern Estádio José Alvalade, built for UEFA Euro 2004. Named after the club's visionary founder, the stadium is recognised as one of Portugal's finest football venues and provides an electric atmosphere for home matches.
Sporting's greatest rivalry is with S.L. Benfica in the Derby de Lisboa, one of Europe's oldest and most passionate city derbies. Matches against F.C. Porto, known as O Clássico, are equally significant and frequently determine the destination of the Portuguese league title.
