Rio Ave FC Crest History
Since its foundation, Rio Ave Futebol Clube has proudly displayed a crest inspired by the maritime heritage of its hometown, Vila do Conde. Throughout its history, the club has remained remarkably faithful to its original identity, making only subtle changes while preserving the symbols that define Rio Ave.
The original crest, introduced in 1939, featured the coat of arms of Vila do Conde placed upon a golden rope-shaped shield. At its centre appeared a Portuguese sailing ship above green-and-white waves, symbolising the town's historic connection to the sea and the Ave River. The mural crown and the initials "R.A.F.C." completed a badge that immediately established the club's strong civic identity.
In 1970, Rio Ave experimented with a more modern presentation by placing the traditional crest inside a white circular badge. The words "Rio Ave F.C." and "Vila do Conde" surrounded the historic emblem, giving the club a cleaner and more contemporary look while continuing to emphasise its connection to the city. Although this version remained in use for nearly two decades, the original municipal-style crest continued to be closely associated with the club.
In 1989, Rio Ave returned to its traditional badge. The familiar golden rope, ship, green-and-white waves, and mural crown were restored as the club's primary identity, with only minor refinements to the artwork, colours and proportions.

Founded in 1939, Rio Ave Futebol Clube is one of Portugal's most respected provincial football clubs. Based in the coastal town of Vila do Conde, at the mouth of the Ave River, the club has built a proud tradition through consistent performances, attractive football and a strong connection to its local community. Wearing its traditional green and white colours, Rio Ave has become a familiar name in Portuguese football.
For much of its early history, Rio Ave competed in regional competitions before steadily progressing through the Portuguese football pyramid. The club reached the Primeira Divisão for the first time in 1977, marking the beginning of a new era. Over the following decades, Rio Ave established itself as a competitive professional club, alternating between the top two divisions while earning a reputation for stability and good organisation.
The club's most successful period began during the 2000s, when Rio Ave became a regular member of the Primeira Liga. The greatest season in Rio Ave's history came in 2013–14 under manager Nuno Espírito Santo. The club reached both the Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga finals, becoming the first Portuguese club outside the traditional "Big Three" to reach both major domestic cup finals in the same season. Although Rio Ave lost both finals to Benfica, it qualified for the UEFA Europa League, marking its first appearance in European competition.
Rio Ave has since remained a respected force in Portuguese football, regularly competing in the Primeira Liga and earning further European qualification through strong league finishes.
Following relegation in 2021, Rio Ave responded immediately by winning the Liga Portugal 2 title in 2021–22, securing an instant return to the top flight. The promotion demonstrated the club's resilience and reinforced its reputation as one of Portugal's best-managed provincial clubs.
The club's principal rivalries are with nearby Varzim S.C. in the Derby do Ave, while regional encounters with Boavista, F.C. Famalicão, Gil Vicente and Moreirense also generate considerable interest.
