Comerciantes Unidos Crest History
The crest history of Comerciantes Unidos is strongly connected with the club's home city of Cutervo, in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru. Throughout the versions shown here, the eagle has remained the central symbol and provides the origin of the club's famous nickname, Las Águilas Cutervinas — The Eagles of Cutervo.
The crest used from 2010 to 2022 followed a traditional football-shield design. Its principal colours were purple and yellow, colours that became strongly associated with Comerciantes Unidos during its rise through Peruvian football. The badge featured a broad shield with curved sides and a decorative pointed upper section. Across the top appeared the words CLUB DEPORTIVO in yellow capital letters. The centre of the shield contained a large yellow circular field, providing a strong contrast with the surrounding purple. Inside this circle appeared the club's most important visual symbol: a purple eagle.
The eagle was depicted with its wings spread while controlling a football beneath it, directly connecting the regional symbol with the club's sporting identity. Around the lower part of the shield appeared the name COMERCIANTES UNIDOS. A decorative ribbon was positioned beneath the main shield. The name CUTERVO appeared prominently within this lower section, reinforcing the club's strong identification with its home city. Several small stars were incorporated into the ribbon as decorative elements. Above the crest appeared three larger stars, creating a crown-like arrangement over the badge. Overall, the 2010–2022 crest was highly traditional in appearance, combining a conventional football shield, club colours, regional identity and the eagle symbol.
In 2022, Comerciantes Unidos introduced a substantially redesigned crest. The traditional shield was replaced by a circular emblem, giving the club a much more contemporary visual identity. Despite the dramatic change in shape, the designers retained the eagle as the central element. In the modern badge, however, the eagle is depicted in considerably greater detail. It appears with its wings fully extended, dominating the centre of the composition. This gives the emblem a stronger and more aggressive visual character than the simplified eagle used in the previous crest. Behind the eagle appears a stylised mountain landscape. This imagery provides an important geographical connection with Cutervo and the mountainous Cajamarca region. The addition of the landscape makes the modern crest much more explicitly regional than its predecessor. The words CLUB DEPORTIVO appear above the eagle in white lettering. Across the lower centre, the club's name is divided into two levels. COMERCIANTES appears in smaller lettering, while UNIDOS is presented much more prominently in large green capital letters. This makes UNIDOS one of the strongest visual components of the modern badge. Beneath the club name appears the year 2002, commemorating the foundation of Comerciantes Unidos. At the bottom of the circular emblem is the inscription CUTERVO PERÚ, firmly establishing the geographical identity of the club.
Comerciantes Unidos Club History
Comerciantes Unidos is a professional football club from Cutervo, in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru. Founded on 19 September 2002, the club has developed from a local team into one of the most recognisable representatives of Cutervo in Peruvian professional football.
The club was established by a group of local merchants and football enthusiasts, a background reflected directly in the name Comerciantes Unidos, United Merchants. From its beginnings, Comerciantes Unidos developed a particularly strong connection with the city of Cutervo. This regional identity eventually produced the nickname Las Águilas Cutervinas, The Eagles of Cutervo, with the eagle becoming the dominant symbol on the club's crest.
Unlike Peru's traditional professional clubs from Lima, Comerciantes Unidos began its competitive life within the country's regional football structure. Its route toward professional football therefore passed through the demanding Copa Perú system. Copa Perú has historically offered clubs from towns and regions throughout the country an opportunity to progress from local and departmental competitions toward national football.
Comerciantes Unidos gradually established itself as one of the strongest teams in the Cajamarca region. The club's progress gave Cutervo an increasingly important presence within regional football and created ambitions of reaching Peru's professional divisions. A major breakthrough came in 2008, when Comerciantes Unidos reached the national stage of the Copa Perú. Although promotion was not achieved, the campaign demonstrated that the young club could compete beyond its regional surroundings.
Comerciantes Unidos continued attempting to progress through the Copa Perú structure during the following seasons. The decisive step finally came in 2013. Strong performances earned the club promotion into Peru's Segunda División, bringing Comerciantes Unidos into professional football. The move represented an important achievement not only for the club but also for Cutervo, which now had a representative competing nationally.
Comerciantes Unidos made its Segunda División debut in 2014.The club adapted quickly to the professional level and immediately demonstrated ambitions beyond simply maintaining its place in the division. The breakthrough season arrived in 2015. Comerciantes Unidos produced an excellent campaign and won the Peruvian Segunda División championship. The title secured promotion to the Primera División for the first time in the club's history.
Only thirteen years after its foundation, the small club from Cutervo had reached the highest level of Peruvian football. Comerciantes Unidos therefore entered the 2016 Primera División as one of the country's most interesting new regional teams. Rather than struggling simply to survive, Las Águilas Cutervinas produced an impressive debut campaign. The club competed strongly against much larger and more established institutions and finished high enough to qualify for international competition.
This achievement earned Comerciantes Unidos a place in the 2017 Copa Sudamericana. Qualification represented one of the greatest achievements in the club's history. A team that had been playing regional football only a few years earlier was now representing Peru in a CONMEBOL competition. Comerciantes Unidos faced Boston River of Uruguay in its Copa Sudamericana debut.
The Peruvian side was eliminated, but simply participating in continental competition represented an extraordinary milestone for a club founded only in 2002. The rapid progression from regional football to the Copa Sudamericana demonstrated the speed with which Comerciantes Unidos had developed. Maintaining that position proved considerably more difficult.
Results declined during the following seasons and the club became involved in a battle against relegation. At the end of the 2018 season, Comerciantes Unidos was relegated from Peru's top division. The relegation ended the club's first three-year period among the national elite. Comerciantes Unidos subsequently returned to the second level and began a lengthy attempt to regain its Primera División status. The years outside the top flight proved challenging.
Nevertheless, the club remained an important football institution for Cutervo and continued competing with the objective of returning to Liga 1. During this period, the connection between the team and its hometown remained central to its identity.
The decisive campaign came in 2023. Comerciantes Unidos performed strongly in Liga 2 and secured promotion back to the highest division. The achievement ended approximately five years outside Peru's top flight. Comerciantes Unidos consequently returned to Liga 1 for the 2024 season. The return represented another important chapter in the club's relatively short history.
Unlike many historic Peruvian clubs, Comerciantes Unidos does not have a century-old national rivalry. Its strongest football identity is instead based on regional representation. Matches involving other northern Peruvian clubs can carry additional significance, particularly because of the importance of regional pride within Peruvian football.
