CD Universidad de San Martin de Porres Crest History
The crest of Club Deportivo Universidad de San Martín de Porres has always been closely connected with the identity and symbolism of the Universidad de San Martín de Porres (USMP). Unlike many Peruvian clubs whose badges are based primarily on local or sporting symbols, San Martín's emblem reflects its academic and institutional origins.
When the football club was founded in 2004, it adopted a traditional shield closely based on the university's established visual identity. The 2004–2022 crest was predominantly black and white, giving it a formal and academic appearance. The badge took the form of a vertically oriented shield with a gently curved upper edge and pointed lower section. At the centre appeared a smaller shield divided into contrasting black-and-white sections. Within this central element was a stylised cross, a symbol strongly associated with the university's namesake, Saint Martin de Porres. Surrounding the central shield was the Latin motto “VERITAS LIBERABIT VOS”. The phrase translates as “The truth will set you free” and reflects the educational and Catholic identity of the university. This motto made the badge immediately different from most conventional football crests, emphasising that the club had been created as part of a larger university institution. Above the shield appeared an eight-pointed star, another established element of the institutional emblem. As the football team became successful, additional stars were incorporated around the badge to commemorate its sporting achievements. The three gold stars displayed beneath the crest represent Universidad San Martín's three Peruvian national championships.
In 2022, the institution introduced a dramatically modernised visual identity. The traditional black-and-white shield disappeared and was replaced by a much cleaner blue-and-white emblem. Despite the radical stylistic change, several important historical elements were preserved. The central design remains based around a shield, but it has been simplified into a geometric form. Inside the shield is a distinctive arrangement of alternating blue and white triangular sections, creating a dynamic pinwheel-like composition. This abstraction replaces the more detailed religious and heraldic imagery of the previous badge while maintaining a connection with the university's institutional symbolism. The Latin motto VERITAS LIBERABIT VOS was retained. Instead of being incorporated inside the shield, however, the words now curve around the outside of the central emblem. This creates a more open and contemporary composition while preserving one of the strongest links with the original badge. The eight-pointed star was also retained above the shield. The most visible colour change was the move from black and white to deep blue and white.

Club Deportivo Universidad de San Martín de Porres, commonly known as Universidad San Martín or USMP, is a Peruvian football club from Lima, founded in 2004 by the Universidad de San Martín de Porres. Unlike many of Peru's traditional clubs, whose histories extend back to the early twentieth century, San Martín was created as a modern university-backed football project with the ambition of competing immediately within the country's professional game.
The club entered professional football after acquiring the sporting rights that allowed it to participate in the Peruvian Primera División in 2004. This meant that San Martín began its existence directly at the highest level rather than progressing through Peru's traditional regional and Copa Perú system.
The university provided the new club with financial and organisational stability, while its identity was closely linked to the Universidad de San Martín de Porres. This relationship produced the nickname Los Santos,The Saints, referring to Saint Martin de Porres, after whom the university and club are named.
The club traditionally played in predominantly white, producing another common nickname, Los Albos, The Whites.
The breakthrough of the club came in 2007. Only three years after its foundation, Universidad San Martín won its first Peruvian national championship. The achievement was extraordinary for such a young club and demonstrated how rapidly the university-backed project had developed. Rather than proving to be an isolated success, San Martín immediately confirmed its position among Peru's leading teams.
In 2008, the club successfully defended its championship and became Peruvian champion for the second consecutive season. Two national titles within five years of the club's creation represented an exceptional beginning to its professional history.
San Martín became a regular Peruvian representative in the Copa Libertadores, bringing the relatively new club into competition against some of South America's most historic institutions.The club's most notable Libertadores campaign came in 2009. San Martín progressed beyond the group stage and reached the Round of 16, demonstrating that its domestic success could also translate into competitive performances at continental level.
Another outstanding domestic campaign followed in 2010. Universidad San Martín captured its third Peruvian championship, defeating León de Huánuco in the championship play-off. The victory completed an extraordinary sequence. Between 2007 and 2010, San Martín had won three national championships in four seasons. The titles of 2007, 2008 and 2010 remain the defining achievements in Universidad San Martín's football history.
The club's rise also changed the competitive landscape of Peruvian football. Traditionally, the country's major honours had been dominated by historic institutions such as Universitario de Deportes, Alianza Lima and Sporting Cristal.
San Martín also did not develop a single historic rivalry comparable with the Superclásico between Alianza Lima and Universitario. Its most important matches were instead generally defined by sporting competition with Peru's established leading clubs.
Following the championship-winning period, San Martín remained in the top division but struggled to reproduce the dominance of 2007–2010. A major institutional crisis emerged in 2012. Universidad San Martín announced its withdrawal from the Peruvian championship amid a dispute surrounding the organisation of professional football and player-related issues. For a period, the future of the football club appeared uncertain. The decision was subsequently reconsidered and San Martín returned to competition.
Although the episode did not end the club, it marked a clear dividing point between its extraordinarily successful early period and the more difficult decade that followed. By the early 2020s, the sporting situation had become considerably more difficult. San Martín struggled near the bottom of the standings and faced repeated battles to preserve its top-flight status. The club was eventually relegated from Liga 1 following the 2022 season, ending an uninterrupted top-flight presence that had begun with its creation in 2004. Relegation represented one of the most significant moments in the club's history.
For the first time, Universidad San Martín had to rebuild outside Peru's highest division. The club subsequently competed in Liga 2, the second level of Peruvian professional football.
