From 1926 to 2018, Panetolikos used a shield-shaped crest in the club's traditional yellow and blue colours. The badge was divided diagonally, with a yellow upper-left section and a blue lower-right section, framed by a white border. At its centre stood the figure of Heracles (Hercules) carrying a massive boulder, a reference to the ancient Greek hero renowned for his extraordinary strength, perseverance, and courage. Above the figure appeared the club's name ΠΑΝΑΙΤΩΛΙΚΟΣ Γ.Φ.Σ. (Panetolikos Gymnastikos Fosfairikos Syllogos), while the club's motto, "Τίποτε σπουδαίο ούτε άνευ Ηρακλέους" ("Nothing great is achieved without Heracles"), was displayed beneath the name. The founding year 1926 appeared at the bottom of the shield. This emblem remained virtually unchanged for more than ninety years and became one of the most recognisable traditional crests in Greek football, symbolising the club's resilience and its close connection to the region of Aetolia-Acarnania.
In 2018, Panetolikos introduced a modernised version of its historic crest. The club retained the yellow-and-blue shield, the image of Heracles, and the founding year 1926, preserving the symbols that had defined its identity since its foundation. The redesign simplified the artwork, giving Heracles a more dynamic and detailed appearance while removing the diagonal colour split in favour of a predominantly yellow background with a bold blue border. The club's name was moved to the top of the badge in a cleaner, more contemporary typeface, creating a modern visual identity while remaining faithful to Panetolikos' traditions.

Panetolikos Football Club (Panetolikos Gymnastikos Fosfairikos Syllogos) was founded on 9 March 1926 in the city of Agrinio, in western Greece. From its inception, the club was more than just a football team, promoting athletics, education, and culture within the local community. Panetolikos adopted the yellow and blue colours and chose Heracles, the legendary Greek hero, as its symbol, reflecting ideals of strength, perseverance, and determination.
For much of its early history, Panetolikos competed in regional competitions before becoming a regular participant in Greece's national league system. The club gradually established itself as one of the strongest teams in western Greece, earning promotion to the country's higher divisions on several occasions while building a loyal and passionate fan base in Agrinio.
Panetolikos first reached the Alpha Ethniki, Greece's top division, in 1975. Although the club's initial stay was brief, it marked an important milestone and demonstrated that a provincial club from western Greece could compete against the country's traditional football powers. Over the following decades, Panetolikos alternated between the second and third tiers, experiencing periods of financial difficulty while maintaining its strong local identity.
A remarkable revival began in the late 2000s under the ownership of businessman Fotis Kostoulas. Significant investment in the club's infrastructure, youth academy, and first-team squad transformed Panetolikos into one of Greece's best-managed provincial clubs. The team achieved back-to-back promotions, winning the Gamma Ethniki in 2009 before securing promotion from the Beta Ethniki in 2011, returning to the top flight after a 34-year absence.
In 2018, the club modernised its visual identity with a redesigned crest while retaining its historic symbol of Heracles, reinforcing the connection between its rich heritage and modern ambitions. During this period, Panetolikos also continued to improve the Panetolikos Stadium, making it one of the most distinctive football venues in provincial Greece.
Although Panetolikos has yet to win a major national trophy, it has become one of the most respected provincial clubs in Greek football thanks to its stability, community focus, and competitive performances. The club's fiercest rivalry is with nearby PAS Giannina, with meetings between the two clubs often referred to as the Northwest Greece Derby.
