From 1925 to 1980, OFI used a distinctive shield-shaped crest outlined in gold, featuring a bold black diagonal stripe running from the upper left to the lower right. Across the top was a black banner containing the Greek initials ΟΦΗ (Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou). The simple black-and-gold design reflected the club's identity and was inspired by the emblem of N.K. Zagreb, whose founders had friendly ties with OFI during the club's early years. This badge became closely associated with OFI's formative decades and its rise to become Crete's leading football club.
In 1980, following the club's promotion to the Greek top flight and the beginning of its most successful era, the crest was modernised while retaining its familiar shield shape. The gold outline was removed in favour of a black border, and the diagonal stripe became black with the white initials "Ο.Φ.Η." placed prominently across it. The cleaner black-and-white design reflected the club's traditional colours and became the emblem under which OFI achieved many of its greatest successes, including winning the 1987 Greek Cup and competing in European competitions. This version remained in use for over three decades and became one of the most recognisable crests in Greek football.
Between 2016 and 2020, the shield received a subtle update. The overall design remained almost unchanged, but the founding year "1925" was added to the lower-right section of the shield to emphasise the club's heritage. Minor refinements to the typography and proportions gave the badge a more modern appearance while preserving the traditional identity that supporters had embraced for decades.
In 2020, OFI introduced a completely redesigned crest inspired by the club's original 1925 emblem. The traditional shield was replaced by a circular badge featuring a bold interlocking "ΟΦΗ" monogram at its centre. Around the outer ring appear the club's full Greek name, Όμιλος Φιλάθλων Ηρακλείου Κρήτης, together with the founding year 1925 and the city of Heraklion.
OFI Crete FC Club History
OFI Crete FC (Omilos Filathlon Irakleiou) was founded on 4 October 1925 in Heraklion, becoming one of the oldest and most successful football clubs on the island of Crete. Established by a group of local sports enthusiasts, OFI quickly developed into the island's leading football institution, representing Crete at the national level for much of its history.
During the club's early decades, OFI dominated regional football before joining Greece's national league system. The club achieved promotion to the Alpha Ethniki (now the Super League) in 1968, becoming the first Cretan club to establish itself consistently in the country's top division. Although relegated on several occasions during the 1970s, OFI soon returned stronger and began the most successful era in its history.
The 1980s were the club's golden years under legendary Dutch coach Eugène Gerards, who transformed OFI into one of Greece's strongest teams. The club regularly challenged the traditional powers of Greek football and reached its greatest achievement by winning the 1986–87 Greek Cup, defeating Iraklis 3–1 in the final. OFI also finished as runners-up in the 1985–86 Alpha Ethniki, the highest league finish ever achieved by a club from Crete.
Success on the domestic stage earned OFI several appearances in European competitions. During the late 1980s and 1990s, the club competed in the UEFA Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup, and UEFA Intertoto Cup, recording memorable victories against respected European opposition. During this period, OFI became known for its attractive attacking football and for producing talented Greek internationals.
Following the departure of Gerards and the end of the club's golden era, OFI experienced a more difficult period. Financial instability and inconsistent performances led to several relegations and promotions during the 2000s and early 2010s. In 2015, severe financial problems forced the club to withdraw from the Super League before the end of the season and restart from the Gamma Ethniki, Greece's third tier.
The club recovered remarkably, achieving back-to-back promotions and returning to the Greek Super League in 2018.
One of the highlights of OFI's recent resurgence came in the 2024–25 season when the club reached the Greek Cup Final for the first time since its triumph in 1987. Although they were defeated by Olympiacos, the run to the final demonstrated the club's renewed competitiveness and reinforced its status as one of Greece's historic football institutions.
OFI enjoys passionate support throughout Crete and shares fierce rivalries with fellow Cretan clubs Ergotelis, Platanias, and Chania.
