Founded on 29 November 1912 as FC Amisia Meppen, SV Meppen traces its origins to one of the oldest football clubs in the Emsland region. Following a merger with Männer-Turnverein Meppen in 1920 to form TuS Meppen 1912, the football department became independent a year later under the name Sportverein Meppen 1912. The club's rise gathered momentum after the Second World War. Promotion to the Amateurliga Niedersachsen in 1957 was followed by league championships in 1961 and 1968, while promotion to the Regionalliga Nord in 1970 marked Meppen's arrival in the second tier of German football. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, the club became a regular competitor in the Oberliga Nord, laying the foundations for the most successful period in its history.
A historic breakthrough arrived in 1987, when SV Meppen won the Oberliga Nord and secured promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. Built largely around local talent, the club became one of German football's great underdog stories, spending eleven consecutive seasons in the second tier. Despite operating with one of the league's smallest budgets, Meppen consistently competed in mid-table and earned nationwide admiration for its passionate supporters and remarkable stability.
One of the club's most memorable achievements came during the 1996–97 DFB-Pokal, when SV Meppen stunned Eintracht Frankfurt with a famous 6–1 victory to reach the quarter-finals.
