RB Leipzig Crest History
Founded in 2009, RB Leipzig introduced its first official crest upon the club's formation following the acquisition of SSV Markranstädt's playing licence. The original badge closely resembled the corporate Red Bull logo, featuring two red bulls charging towards a football beneath the words "Red Bull" and "Leipzig". Although the design established an immediate visual connection with the club's principal investor, it was rejected by the German Football Association (DFB) for being too similar to the company's commercial branding.
In 2010, RB Leipzig unveiled a redesigned crest that complied with German football regulations while preserving the club's emerging identity. The words "Red Bull" were replaced by the initials "RB", officially representing RasenBallsport, while the two charging bulls and central football were retained. The simplified shield maintained the club's red, white and blue colour scheme and quickly became associated with RB Leipzig's rapid rise through the German league system.
Throughout the following decade, the crest remained largely unchanged as the club achieved successive promotions from the Oberliga to the Bundesliga. Minor refinements to the typography, outlines and proportions improved the badge's appearance across merchandise and digital media, while the iconic twin bulls and football remained the defining elements of the club's visual identity.
A significant refinement arrived in 2020, when RB Leipzig introduced a cleaner and more contemporary version of its crest. The letters "RB" were removed entirely, leaving only the words "RB Leipzig" beneath a larger football and the familiar charging bulls. The shield was simplified with sharper outlines and improved proportions, creating a more balanced and modern appearance while remaining consistent with the club's established identity.
The current crest represents a careful evolution of the badge first introduced in 2010. Featuring the distinctive twin red bulls, central football and clean shield design, it reflects RB Leipzig's modern identity while complying with German football regulations.
RB Leipzig Club History
Founded on 19 May 2009, RB Leipzig was established after Red Bull GmbH acquired the playing licence of SSV Markranstädt with the ambition of creating a top-level football club in eastern Germany. To comply with German Football Association regulations restricting commercial club names, the club was officially registered as RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V., allowing it to retain the initials "RB" while avoiding direct use of the Red Bull brand. Starting in the NOFV-Oberliga Süd, the fifth tier of German football, the club embarked on one of the fastest rises in European football history.
Backed by substantial investment and a long-term development strategy, RB Leipzig achieved successive promotions through the German league system. The club reached the 3. Liga in 2013, earned promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2014, and completed its remarkable ascent by reaching the Bundesliga for the first time in 2016, just seven years after its foundation. Unlike many newly promoted clubs, Leipzig immediately established itself among Germany's elite, finishing as Bundesliga runners-up in its debut season and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.
RB Leipzig quickly became a regular competitor in domestic and European competitions. Under managers including Ralph Hasenhüttl, Julian Nagelsmann and Marco Rose, the club earned a reputation for high-intensity attacking football, innovative coaching and outstanding player development. Leipzig reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2020, followed by another semi-final appearance in 2022, firmly establishing itself among Europe's leading clubs.
The club celebrated its first major honours by winning the DFB-Pokal in 2022, defeating SC Freiburg on penalties after coming from behind with ten men. Leipzig successfully defended the trophy in 2023 with a convincing victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, before also lifting the DFL-Supercup in 2023 after a memorable win against Bayern Munich. These triumphs confirmed RB Leipzig's status as one of Germany's most successful clubs of the modern era.
Despite its rapid sporting success, RB Leipzig has remained one of the most controversial clubs in German football. Its ownership structure and close relationship with Red Bull GmbH have attracted criticism from supporters of traditional clubs, who argue that it conflicts with the spirit of Germany's 50+1 ownership rule. At the same time, Leipzig has been widely praised for its world-class academy, modern infrastructure and ability to develop young talent, with players such as Timo Werner, Dayot Upamecano, Christopher Nkunku, Dani Olmo and Josko Gvardiol emerging as international stars during their time at the club.
Its fiercest rivalry is with 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, reflecting the city's footballing history, while matches against Dynamo Dresden and Hallescher FC also carry regional significance. In recent years, encounters with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen have developed into some of the Bundesliga's most anticipated fixtures as RB Leipzig has become a regular challenger for domestic honours.
