NK Lokomotiva Zagreb Crest History

The first modern crest associated with NK Lokomotiva Zagreb was introduced around 1980 and remained in use for more than three decades. The club adopted a simple oval badge featuring bold blue-and-white vertical stripes, reflecting the colours traditionally associated with Lokomotiva. Across the centre, the club name NK Lokomotiva Zagreb appeared in black lettering, while the foundation year 1914 was displayed at the bottom. The clean and minimalist design reflected the club's modest identity during a period spent largely outside the Croatian top flight and became synonymous with Lokomotiva's gradual rise through the football pyramid.

In 2013, following the club's emergence as an established member of the Croatian First Football League and after achieving its first major success by finishing runners-up in the 2012–13 season, Lokomotiva unveiled a completely redesigned crest. The traditional oval was replaced by a modern shield inspired by the front of a steam locomotive, paying tribute to the club's railway origins. Blue-and-white vertical stripes remained the dominant visual element, while a stylised locomotive headlamp, a football positioned above the crest and the foundation year 1914 reinforced the club's historic identity. The updated badge also introduced gold detailing, giving the emblem a more contemporary and professional appearance while preserving the colours and heritage that had represented Lokomotiva for decades. 

NK Lokomotiva Zagreb Club History

Founded in 1914 as Željezničarski športski klub Victoria, NK Lokomotiva Zagreb is one of the oldest football clubs in the Croatian capital. Established by railway workers, the club reflected the rapid expansion of Zagreb's railway industry during the early twentieth century. After the First World War, the club adopted the name Željezničar, under which it competed throughout the interwar period, generally remaining in the shadow of the city's larger clubs, Građanski, HAŠK and Concordia.

Following the end of the Second World War in 1945, the club was renamed Lokomotiva, the name it still carries today. The immediate post-war years proved to be the most successful period in the club's early history. Between 1947 and 1955, Lokomotiva established itself in the Yugoslav First League, achieving its highest-ever finish of third place in 1952, behind Hajduk Split and Red Star Belgrade. Led by players such as Vlado Čonč and Oto Bobek, Lokomotiva gained a reputation as one of Yugoslavia's most competitive clubs before relegation in 1957 ended its stay in the top flight.

The following decades were considerably more difficult. Lokomotiva spent much of its existence in the lower divisions of Yugoslav and later Croatian football, while financial challenges during the 1990s brought the club close to extinction. Despite these setbacks, Lokomotiva survived and gradually rebuilt itself through a strong emphasis on youth development and organisational stability.

A remarkable revival began during the 2000s. Successive promotions carried Lokomotiva from the lower regional leagues to the Croatian First Football League, with promotion to the top division secured for the 2009–10 season. The club quickly established itself as a stable member of the Croatian top flight and became widely recognised for developing talented young players. Its modern training centre in Kajzerica evolved into one of Croatia's leading football academies, producing numerous youth internationals and future Croatian internationals.

The club enjoyed its greatest modern successes during the 2010s. Lokomotiva finished runners-up in the Croatian First League in 2012–13 and again in 2019–20, while also reaching the Croatian Cup Final on two occasions. Regular qualification for UEFA competitions followed, with the club earning a reputation for attractive football and for providing a pathway for young players to progress to the highest level.

Today, NK Lokomotiva Zagreb continues to compete in the Croatian top division while remaining committed to youth development and sustainable growth. Based at Kajzerica in southern Zagreb, the club has invested heavily in modern training facilities and has become one of Croatia's most respected academies, regularly producing players for the Croatian national teams and Europe's major leagues.

Lokomotiva's principal local rivalry is with GNK Dinamo Zagreb, with whom it contests the Zagreb Derby. Although the fixture lacks the historical intensity of Dinamo's rivalry with Hajduk Split, meetings between the two clubs are notable because both are based in Zagreb and have shared a close sporting relationship, particularly during the 2000s and 2010s. This relationship has often attracted public attention and debate due to player loans and transfers between the clubs.

Lokomotiva also shares city rivalries with NK Zagreb and NK Rudeš, although these fixtures have become less frequent because of the clubs' differing league status in recent years.
