CD Universidad de Concepción Crest History
The crest history of CD Universidad de Concepción is closely connected to the identity of the Universidad de Concepción and one of the university's most recognisable landmarks: the Campanil, the bell tower that stands at the centre of its campus. Unlike many football crests based on animals or initials, Universidad de Concepción has consistently placed this architectural symbol at the heart of its badge.
The earliest crest shown here, used between 1998 and 2009, already established virtually all the elements that would define the club's visual identity.
The badge used a vertically oriented shield with a predominantly yellow background and blue detailing, reflecting Universidad de Concepción's traditional sporting colours.
Across the top appeared the words CLUB DEPORTIVO, while UNIVERSIDAD DE CONCEPCIÓN was written around the curved lower section of the shield. This clearly identified the football team as part of the wider university sporting institution.
The most prominent graphic element was an enormous stylised blue letter U, occupying almost the entire interior of the shield.
Inside the U stood an illustration of the Campanil de la Universidad de Concepción, the university's famous bell tower. The landmark is one of the principal symbols of both the university and the city of Concepción.
The Campanil also explains the football club's best-known nickname, El Campanil — The Bell Tower. Its inclusion makes the crest unusually specific to the institution and location represented by the team.
In the original version, the tower was rendered largely in white and blue, with architectural details visible along its narrow vertical structure.
Beneath the Campanil appeared a textured semicircular area representing the base or surrounding landscape, completing the central composition.
Around 2010, the crest received a noticeable graphical refinement rather than a complete redesign.
The 2010–2025 version retained the same shield, enormous U, Campanil and surrounding wording, demonstrating the strength and recognition of the established identity.
The principal difference was the treatment of the central monument. The Campanil became more strongly integrated into the club's yellow-and-blue colour scheme, replacing much of the white detailing of the earlier version.
The tower was also redrawn with cleaner lines and greater symmetry. Its clock and architectural features became more clearly defined, giving the badge a more polished appearance.
The area beneath the Campanil was simplified into a series of horizontal blue lines, replacing the more textured pattern used in the previous crest.
The typography was also refined. CLUB DEPORTIVO remained prominently positioned across the top, while UNIVERSIDAD DE CONCEPCIÓN continued to follow the lower curve of the badge.
These changes modernised the crest without altering its fundamental symbolism. The large U still represented the university, while the Campanil remained the unmistakable centrepiece.
In 2026, Universidad de Concepción introduced another updated version of the crest.
Once again, the overall composition was preserved. Rather than abandoning its traditional badge, the club chose to modernise the existing identity.
The most noticeable change is the use of a much darker navy blue, replacing the brighter blue that characterised the previous versions.
Combined with the strong yellow background, this darker colour creates greater contrast and gives the crest a more contemporary appearance.

CD Universidad de Concepción Club History
Club Deportivo Universidad de Concepción was founded on 8 August 1994 as the professional sporting organisation representing the Universidad de Concepción, one of Chile's most important universities. Although organised university sport in Concepción has a much longer tradition, the modern football club dates from the 1990s.
The club developed a strong identity around the university's traditional yellow and blue colours. Its most recognisable symbol is the Campanil, the famous bell tower on the Universidad de Concepción campus, which appears prominently on the crest and gave the team its nickname El Campanil.
Universidad de Concepción entered Chile's national football structure during the 1990s and progressed rapidly. Unlike many traditional Chilean clubs with histories extending back to the early twentieth century, UdeC had to build its professional identity in a relatively short period.
The club's rise through the divisions culminated in promotion to the Primera División for the 2003 season, less than a decade after its foundation.
Universidad de Concepción immediately demonstrated that it could compete at the highest level. Its strong performances during its first top-flight seasons transformed El Campanil from a university-based newcomer into an established participant in Chilean professional football.
The club also reached international competition remarkably quickly. Universidad de Concepción qualified for the 2004 Copa Libertadores, making its debut in South America's most prestigious club competition only around a decade after its creation.
This rapid progression was one of the most impressive aspects of the club's early history. In only a few years, UdeC had progressed from the lower levels of Chilean football to competing against major clubs from across South America.
Another important achievement came in 2008, when Universidad de Concepción won the Copa Chile, securing the first major national trophy in the club's history.
The cup victory confirmed the progress made since promotion and established Universidad de Concepción as more than simply a competitive provincial side.
A difficult period followed when the club was relegated from the Primera División in 2012. However, the setback proved temporary.
Universidad de Concepción earned promotion back to the top flight in 2013, quickly restoring its position among Chile's leading professional clubs.
The return was accompanied by another major cup success. Universidad de Concepción won the 2014–15 Copa Chile, defeating Palestino in the final and securing the competition for the second time.
The two Copa Chile victories became important landmarks in the history of El Campanil, particularly because the club had still existed for only around two decades when the second trophy was won.
Universidad de Concepción continued to develop during the second half of the 2010s and produced one of its finest league campaigns in 2018.
The club challenged for the Primera División championship and eventually finished runner-up behind Universidad Católica. It was the highest league finish in Universidad de Concepción's history.
That performance earned another opportunity to compete in the Copa Libertadores, strengthening the club's growing international record.
During its various continental campaigns, Universidad de Concepción has participated in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, allowing the relatively young institution to build a South American presence unusual for a club founded only in the 1990s.
The period of sustained success eventually came to an end, and Universidad de Concepción was relegated from the Primera División following the 2020 season.
The club subsequently competed in Primera B, beginning another rebuilding phase with the objective of returning to Chile's highest division.
A major milestone arrived in 2025, when Universidad de Concepción won the Primera B championship, securing promotion and returning to the Primera División for the 2026 season.
The promotion represented an important revival for El Campanil after several seasons outside the top flight and opened a new chapter in the club's relatively young history.
Unlike many Chilean clubs, Universidad de Concepción's identity is inseparable from the academic institution behind it. The Universidad de Concepción is one of the defining institutions of the city, and its colours, name and Campanil landmark provide the football club with a distinctive regional and university character.
Universidad de Concepción shares its city with the historic Deportes Concepción, giving football in the area an interesting contrast between an older traditional club and the considerably younger university institution.
Matches against other teams from the Biobío Region, particularly Huachipato, also carry strong regional significance as the clubs compete for sporting prominence in one of Chile's most important football areas.
