CD Copiapó Crest History
The crest history of Club de Deportes Copiapó is relatively short because the club was founded only in 1999, but it contains one particularly significant transformation. The original identity was dominated by green and white, while the modern crest introduced in 2014 completely changed the club's visual appearance to red and white and made the lion its central symbol.
The original 1999–2009 crest used a long, pointed shield outlined in dark green. A rectangular section across the top contained the words DEPORTES COPIAPÓ, while the main body of the shield featured the profile of an indigenous figure alongside a football. The word CHILE appeared near the bottom of the badge.
Green and white dominated this first design, giving the newly created club a clearly defined identity. The imagery also distinguished Deportes Copiapó from many Chilean clubs by placing a representation connected with the history and culture of the Atacama region at the centre of the emblem.
In 2010, the club introduced a substantially redesigned badge. The 2010–2014 crest retained the green-and-white colour scheme but replaced the original pointed shield with a more elaborate composition. The words DEPORTES COPIAPÓ curved around the upper and lower parts of the emblem, with a football positioned at the very top.
The initials C D C became much more prominent in this version. They were arranged across the central section of the badge, while the lower part contained a smaller shield featuring a lion. This was an important development because the lion would soon become the defining symbol of the club's identity and is closely connected with the nickname León de Atacama.
A dramatic transformation occurred in 2014. Deportes Copiapó abandoned the green-and-white identity used since its foundation and introduced a completely new red-and-white crest. The badge became a compact, sharply pointed shield with a much simpler and more modern appearance.
The letters C D C were positioned prominently across the upper section of the new crest, immediately identifying Club de Deportes Copiapó. White geometric panels divide the red shield and create a strong, symmetrical structure.
At the centre of the 2014–present badge is the profile of a lion's head. The lion directly represents the club's famous nickname, León de Atacama — the Lion of Atacama, and gives the modern crest a strong connection with both the team and the desert region it represents.
The modern design therefore represents a significant break with the club's earliest visual identity. The indigenous figure, football and green colouring disappeared, while the lion and red-and-white colours became the principal elements of the brand.
CD Copiapó Club History
Club de Deportes Copiapó was founded on 9 March 1999 in the city of Copiapó, capital of Chile's Atacama Region. The club was created to provide the city with a new representative in professional football following the disappearance of Regional Atacama, the historic club that had previously represented Copiapó at national level.
The new organisation began its competitive life in the lower levels of Chilean football. From the outset, Deportes Copiapó strongly identified itself with the Atacama Region, one of the world's most distinctive desert landscapes and an area whose economy and history are closely connected with mining.
Copiapó initially competed in the Tercera División, then part of the country's amateur football structure. The club gradually developed into one of the strongest teams at that level and began pursuing its ambition of bringing professional football back to the city.
A major breakthrough came in 2002, when Deportes Copiapó won the Tercera División championship. The title earned promotion to the Primera B, Chile's professional second tier, and represented the first major trophy in the young club's history.
Promotion transformed Deportes Copiapó into the principal professional football representative of the Atacama regional capital. The club established itself in Primera B despite operating with considerably fewer resources than many teams from Santiago and Chile's other major cities.
The club's home became the Estadio Luis Valenzuela Hermosilla, located in Copiapó. The stadium has played an important role in the identity of the team and provides a natural focal point for football supporters throughout the surrounding Atacama region.
During its early years, Deportes Copiapó played primarily in green and white, colours also reflected in its first crests. A major visual transformation occurred in 2014, when the club adopted its modern red-and-white identity and placed a lion prominently in the crest. The symbol reinforced the increasingly established nickname León de Atacama, the Lion of Atacama.
Much of Copiapó's history has been characterised by attempts to reach the Primera División. The club became a regular competitor in Primera B and experienced several promotion campaigns, gradually moving closer to a historic first appearance in Chile's top flight.
One of the most dramatic moments came in 2021, when Copiapó reached the promotion play-off against Huachipato. After a strong Primera B campaign, the club came close to promotion but ultimately lost the two-legged tie, postponing its dream of reaching the Primera División.
Rather than ending the club's ambitions, that disappointment became the foundation for another challenge. During the 2022 Primera B season, Deportes Copiapó again reached the promotion play-offs and produced a successful campaign through the Liguilla de Ascenso.
The decisive moment came against Cobreloa, one of Chile's most historically successful clubs. After drawing 0–0 in Copiapó, the León de Atacama produced an extraordinary performance in Calama, defeating Cobreloa 5–0 at the Estadio Zorros del Desierto.
That victory secured promotion to the Chilean Primera División for the first time in Deportes Copiapó's history. It was a landmark achievement not only for the club but also for the city, bringing top-flight football back to Copiapó after decades without a local representative at that level.
Deportes Copiapó made its Primera División debut in 2023. The club initially struggled with the demands of the higher division but improved significantly as the season developed. It ultimately secured its top-flight status, completing a successful first campaign among Chile's leading clubs.
The club's time in the Primera División nevertheless proved relatively brief. After competing again in 2024, Copiapó suffered relegation and returned to the second tier, beginning another chapter in its continuing effort to establish itself at the highest level of Chilean football.
Geographically, Deportes Copiapó has developed important northern encounters with clubs such as Cobreloa, Cobresal and Deportes Antofagasta. These matches carry strong regional significance because professional clubs in northern Chile represent communities separated by enormous distances from the traditional football centres around Santiago.
