Founded in 1930, WSG Wattens originally competed under the identity of the Swarovski company sports club, reflecting the close relationship between the football club and the famous crystal manufacturer based in Wattens. During its early years, the club used a simple shield featuring green-and-white vertical stripes beneath the name "Swarovski Wattens", emphasising both its company origins and traditional club colours.
Following promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga in 2019, the club underwent a significant rebranding, adopting the name WSG Tirol to represent the wider Tyrol region rather than only the town of Wattens. A completely new crest was introduced, replacing the traditional striped shield with a circular football-based design featuring the Tyrolean red eagle at its centre. The words "WSG Swarovski Tirol" surrounded the football, combining the club's regional identity with its historic connection to Swarovski.
In 2021, the crest was refined following the club's decision to remove Swarovski from its official playing name. The updated badge retained the football, green-and-white colour scheme and the iconic Tyrolean eagle, while the wording was simplified to "WSG Tirol". This redesign strengthened the club's regional identity while preserving the visual elements introduced during the 2019 rebrand.
WSG Wattens Club History
Founded in 1930 as WSG Wattens (Werkssportgemeinschaft Wattens), the club was established as the works football team of the Swarovski crystal company in the town of Wattens, Tyrol. Closely linked to the local community and its industrial roots, the club spent much of its early history competing in the regional leagues of Austrian football. Wearing its traditional green-and-white colours, WSG developed a reputation as a well-organised provincial club with a strong emphasis on local talent.
During the following decades, WSG Wattens enjoyed periods of success in the Tyrolean and Austrian lower divisions but struggled to establish itself permanently at the national level. The club frequently moved between the regional leagues and the second tier, while continuing to benefit from the long-standing support of Swarovski.
A significant turning point came in the 2010s, when the club steadily climbed through the Austrian football pyramid. After securing promotion to the 2. Liga, WSG emerged as one of the division's strongest sides under coach Thomas Silberberger, whose appointment in 2013 marked the beginning of the most successful period in the club's history. His long-term leadership transformed Wattens into a disciplined, competitive team capable of challenging for promotion.
The club's greatest achievement came in the 2018–19 season when WSG Wattens won the Austrian Second League, earning promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time in its history. To reflect its ambition of representing the entire region rather than only the town of Wattens, the club adopted the name WSG Tirol ahead of its first Bundesliga campaign.
Since promotion, WSG Tirol has established itself as a competitive member of the Austrian top flight despite operating with one of the league's smallest budgets. Because its own stadium in Wattens does not meet Bundesliga requirements, the club plays its home matches at the Tivoli Stadion Tirol in nearby Innsbruck.
Although WSG Tirol does not have a long-standing historic rivalry comparable to Austria's biggest clubs, matches against fellow Tyrolean side WSG Tirol's regional neighbours, as well as fixtures against SK Sturm Graz, LASK, Rapid Wien, and Red Bull Salzburg, have become important tests of the club's progress in the Bundesliga.
