Founded in 1946, TSV Hartberg initially competed under a simple club identity that reflected its origins as a local multi-sports organisation in the Styrian town of Hartberg. For much of its early history, the club used traditional emblems associated with the wider sports club, with football becoming its most prominent section as the team gradually progressed through the Austrian league system.
In 2000, TSV Hartberg introduced its first modern football-specific crest. The design featured a dynamic blue abstract figure in motion above the words "TSV Hartberg Fussball", with a red swoosh completing the logo. The minimalist emblem symbolised speed, energy and ambition, representing the club's growing focus on professional football as it sought promotion through Austria's lower divisions.
A major redesign followed in 2010 with the introduction of the club's current crest. The new badge adopted a traditional shield shape incorporating a football at the top, the founding year 1946, and the words "TSV Hartberg Fussball" across the centre. The modern blue-and-white shield also retained the abstract figure from the previous logo, linking the club's new identity with its recent past while creating a stronger and more recognisable football badge.

The club began making significant progress during the 1990s and 2000s, earning promotion through Austria's lower divisions. Investment in the club's infrastructure and youth development helped Hartberg become increasingly competitive, while consistent performances allowed the team to establish itself in the Austrian Regional League before eventually reaching the 2. Liga, Austria's second tier.
Hartberg's greatest breakthrough came during the 2017–18 season. Under coach Markus Schopp, the club finished as runners-up in the 2. Liga, securing promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time in its history. The achievement marked a remarkable rise for a club from one of Austria's smallest professional football markets and represented the greatest success in Hartberg's history.
Despite being considered one of the league's smallest clubs, TSV Hartberg adapted quickly to life in the Bundesliga. The team established itself as a competitive top-flight side, regularly finishing comfortably above the relegation places and qualifying for the Austrian Bundesliga Championship Round on several occasions. In 2020, Hartberg achieved another historic milestone by qualifying for the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds, marking the club's first participation in European competition.
Although TSV Hartberg does not have a single historic rivalry comparable to Austria's larger clubs, matches against fellow Styrian sides SK Sturm Graz and Grazer AK carry regional significance, while fixtures against clubs such as LASK, Rapid Wien, and Red Bull Salzburg have become increasingly important as Hartberg continues to establish itself in the Austrian top flight.
