The Ground

  • Fratton Park, located in the Fratton area of Portsmouth, Hampshire, has been the home of Portsmouth Football Club (Pompey) since the club's formation in 1898. Unique among English football stadiums, Fratton Park is the only professional football ground in England not located on the mainland—Portsmouth lies on Portsea Island, adding a distinctive geographic quirk to its identity.

  • The stadium was officially opened in 1899, originally designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, whose influence is still visible in the stadium’s classic South Stand façade. Throughout its history, Fratton Park has hosted not only Portsmouth’s domestic fixtures but also wartime internationals and various other sporting events.

  • Today, Fratton Park remains owned and operated by Portsmouth FC, standing as one of the oldest continually used football grounds in the country. Despite its age, it continues to hold a central place in the hearts of Pompey fans, known for its raucous, close-up atmosphere and traditional football setting. The current capacity stands at approximately 20,620, though it has fluctuated over time due to modern safety regulations and ongoing renovations. The record attendance of 51,385 was set in 1949 during an FA Cup match against Derby County.

  • Architecturally, Fratton Park reflects over a century of adaptation. The ground comprises four distinct stands, with the South Stand considered the most historic, while the Fratton End houses some of the most vocal supporters. Though modernisation efforts have been made—including seat upgrades, pitch improvements, and structural refurbishments—the stadium retains a nostalgic charm, with its floodlights and tight pitch adding to the classic English football vibe.
